The 2017 Volkswagen Passat: Elegance on Wheels

The long-awaited 2017 Volkswagen Passat has finally arrived, and boy is it something special. It has an elegantly shaped exterior that is reminiscent of the traditional European look with a luxurious interior to match. This eighth incarnation of the classic Passat features a very spacious interior with a telescoping steering wheel and back seats that will happily accommodate even the tallest adults. The center instrument panel seamlessly integrates an LCD touchscreen with auxiliary audio and USB ports. The roomy interior along with the 15.9 ft³ of trunk space makes this an excellent business sedan as well as a safe family vehicle.

And that’s not all you’ll find with the 2017 Passat, which is available for sale and lease today at VW of Gainesville. Like most Volkswagens, every new Passat features stylish alloy wheels, and most available trims come stock with LED headlights and remote ignition. But it’s what’s under the hood that really makes the new VW Passat truly magical.

The Turbocharged Models

Passat base models are equipped with the award-winning EA888 double overhead cam turbocharged engine (whew—what a mouthful). The 1.8L Borg Warner turbocharger increases the combustion pressure to 19 psi to deliver 170 horsepower, similar to the power output of a 2.5-liter engine but with reduced RPMs and weight. Other weight-saving features of this engine include an aluminum engine block and an exhaust header built into the block itself, obviating the need for heavy flanges and bolts. The turbocharger itself comes with a CNC-machined compression wheel, and the entire assembly is capable of withstanding a temperature of 1796° Fahrenheit. The turbo’s intake is also water-cooled, which allows increased air delivery rate on account of cold air’s higher density.

The Faster VR6 Option

The highly-coveted VR6 engine is also available in the 2017 Passat. This staggered-piston configuration makes excellent use of space and weight while delivering pleasing harmonics. Ever since the Volkswagen Corrado, we’ve loved the sound of this Volkswagen-exclusive VR6 engine, and every auto enthusiast should experience its ‘grumble’. The 3.6-liter model in the 2017 Passat has a more-than-respectable power output of 280 horsepower (258 ft⋅lb torque) that allows the car to hit 60mph in 6.5 seconds. Plus, there are nifty paddle shifters, which we know you love.

Transmissions Designed for Performance

The 1.8-liter turbocharged models are fitted with a six-speed automatic transmission while models with a VR6 are equipped with a Dualtronic™ dual-clutch made by Borg Warner—yes, it’s the same company that supplies the dual-clutch transmission to Buggati for their Veyron model, the fastest street-legal production car in the world.

This Dualtronic™ transmission has two concentric oil-immersed clutches that couple with different sets of gears; one clutch is mated to the odd gears and one to the even gears. The idea behind this configuration is that shifting can occur instantaneously since one gear couples to the drivetrain at the very moment the other uncouples. This leads to the fastest shifting time out of any transmission configuration and helps the Passat’s VR6-engined models achieve its 0-60 time. It also increases fuel economy by 10-15% over standard automatic transmissions.

Good on Fuel too

New turbocharged Passats have a fuel economy of ²⁵⁄₃₈, which is better than average considering for their power outputs. It achieves this by using a sixth gear ratio of .67 and a drag coefficient of .29. These factors, along with the turbocharger, allows the aerodynamic Passat to equal the fuel economy of smaller cars (on the highway) such as the Corolla, Camry, and Accord. For any suburban commuter coming into Gainesville, this makes the Passat a step above most competitors.

Safety Features

As far as safety goes, you can feel secure in the new VW Passat. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has given the Passat their highest rating of five stars after testing its ability to withstand a collision. All new Passats feature side-impact airbags in the front and rear seats. Disc brakes on all four tires, as well as computer-assisted traction control, should give additional confidence to drivers in inclement conditions. It also earned a coveted Top Safety Pick from the IIHS.
