Improper Car Seat Use Widespread

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 3 out of 4 car seats are not used correctly. The LATCH system is designed to make it easier to install and secure car seats properly. There are two small bars/anchors located between the space between the rear seat back and the rear seat cushion. Also, there are a minimum of three anchors located behind the back seat on the vehicle’s shelf. Most car seats come with special tether straps designed to be used with this system.

For specific instructions regarding how to uses the LATCH system for your particular type of child car seat, please refer to your Passat Owner’s Manual and the instructions that came with your car seat. You can download helpful instructional videos and other valuable information about the LATCH system from the NHTSA website at http://www.nhtsa.gov/Safety/LATCH.

What Florida Law Says About Child Safety

Florida law requires that children age 5 and under must be secured by a federally approved child restraint device. Child car seats should also never be used in the front seats. The back seat is always the safest place for your child.

According to the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FHSMV) website, a 2015 change to the state’s child safety law now requires children ages 4 and 5 to use a booster seat that places the seatbelt across the child’s body in the proper position. The following guidelines should be used to determine if a child older than age 5 is ready to graduate from a booster seat to just wearing a seatbelt.

  • The child is at least 4 ft. and 9 in. tall
  • The child can sit all the way back in the seat and bend their knees at the edge of the seat
  • The shoulder belt lays across the child’s chest and not the neck
  • The lap belt lays across the upper thighs and not the stomach
