Why You’ll Love Road Trips In A 2016 Volkswagen Golf

It’s summertime and the long semester at UF has finally ended. You’re itching to put the campus in your rearview mirror and take off for a well-deserved summer break. Sounds like a road trip is in your immediate future. So why not text one of your BFFs, make your plans, gather your gear, and head out to Orlando, the beach (well, of course, the beach!), or maybe even a longer trek to places you’ve never been before.

We forgot one not-so-minor detail. How will you get there? Sure, you can borrow the family minivan (uh, no), cross your fingers that your second-hand car can make the trip (minus the air conditioning which quit a couple of weeks ago), or hope that your friend has a decent set of wheel. (Wait a minute, they’re hoping YOU have a decent set of wheels. Okay, scratch that idea.)

Now don’t get all discouraged because we have the answer to this summertime vehicular vacation dilemma, oh yes we do. Here at your hometown Gainesville VW new car dealer, VW of Gainesville, we have the perfect summer getaway car for you and your friend (drumroll please): the fun-to-drive, award-winning new 2016 Golf.

The 2016 Golf for sale in Gainesville at VW of Gainesville is the perfect summer road trip companion for you and your friends. Its hip, youthful vibe says “let’s go!” This is one hot hatchback with tons of personality, plenty of space for your friends and their gear, plus the performance, handling, and fuel economy that you’re looking for.

An Award-Winning Trendsetter

The 2016 Golf is largely carried over from the 2015 model, and that’s a good thing. A very good thing, in fact. Because last year the 2015 Golf received the automotive industry’s most prestigious accolade:  Motor Trend Magazine’s “Car of the Year.” You have to have some serious mojo to win the coveted “Golden Calipers.”

Speaking of awards, the 2016 Golf achieved a milestone when it was named Car And Driver Magazine’s prestigious “10Best” for the 10th time in a row. That’s 10-out-of 10 in case anyone was counting. (Well we were counting, of course.)

In fact, the Golf has become the benchmark against which all other hatchbacks are measured. The publication heaped praise on the Golf, with it earning top marks in six of the COTY’s judging categories. “No matter which Golf variant we jumped into, we emerged with smiles on our faces,” the publication enthused.

Fresh European Styling

Clean, crisp, and contemporary describes the 2016 Golf’s European-inspired exterior design. It’s fresh and modern without being flashy or giving in to the latest fads. Its sleek, sculpted appearance will still look great years from now. The same can be said for the Golf’s surprisingly spacious and sports-minded interior. You’ll discover a higher level of form, function, and craftsmanship when you get behind of the wheel of the Golf.

German-Crafted Quality

Everything about the Golf’s interior is solid, well-built, and substantial, from the three-spoke steering wheel and shifter to every switch and control. VW didn’t scrimp on premium materials, either. The fit and finish are excellent, so much so that you’ll think you’re driving a car costing lots more. After all, VW also builds high-end Audis, and the Golf shares that same zealous attention to detail and quality.

Motor Trend calls the Golf “…a Jackrabbit of all trades.” The Golf’s versatility and practicality give you more options to load up both passengers and gear. Fold both the split 60/40 rear seats down and you get 52.7 cubic feet of cargo space. The Golf’s wide rear liftgate makes loading and unloading a breeze. Plus you and your passengers will have plenty of room to enjoy the ride. Even though the Golf is a compact hatch on the outside, Motor Trend says that “…there’s more apparent cabin space in the Golf than in some midsize sedans.” Now that’s saying something.

High-Tech Designed For Your Lifestyle

The 2016 Golf lets you hit the road without having to let go of your modern, social, and interconnected lifestyle. A standard feature on the Golf is a 6.5-inch touchscreen audio display with a rearview camera that lets you easily control a variety of impressive infotainment functions. The Golf also comes with VW Car-Net® App-Connect™ that provides an easy-to-use interface for your compatible smartphones via Apple CarPlay™, Android Auto™ or MirrorLink®.

Now you can summon many of your smartphone’s capabilities at a moment’s notice, including maps, messaging, music, and more. Use Google Voice™ to command an array of functions and access numerous third-party apps such as Spotify, iHeart Radio, Audible, Stitcher, and more. Get enhanced navigation, weather and traffic reports, and other handy features via a subscription to SiriusXM® Traffic and Travel Link.

Simply A Blast To Drive

If you’re looking for taut, nimble handling and turbocharged performance than you’ve come to the right place. The standard engine in the 2016 Golf is a 1.8-liter, 170-hp TSI® turbocharged engine. That’s right. We said turbocharged. Standard. Uh Huh. In fact, when the folks at Motor Trend were putting the 2015 Golf through its paces, they said the 1.8-liter 4-cylinder inline engine “…must vie for the title of the best standard engine in its segment…”

We rest our case.

But, hold on, if you want to seriously amp up your driving excitement, the 2016 Golf GTI, and top-of-the-line Golf R deliver the goods. The Golf GTI with its 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine bumps up the power to 210 horsepower and 258 lb. ft. of torque. For the ultimate four-wheeled thrill ride, then buckle in and get ready for liftoff in the adrenaline-pumping Golf R. its 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder generates an awesome 292 horsepower and 280 lb. ft. of torque for head-snapping, rocket-like acceleration. (Just don’t tell NASA.) You can also have your choice of a slick shifting 6-speed manual transmission or a twin-clutch automatic transmission.

Fuel economy ratings are also excellent for all three engine variants. The 1.8-liter engine gets an EPA-estimated 25 mpg city/37 mpg highway for 1.8. The Golf GTI gets 25 mpg city/34 mpg highway, while the Golf R achieves 22 mpg city/31 mpg highway.

Are they fun to drive? Yes. Yes. And yes.

Getting You There Safely

You want to arrive at your destination safely and so does VW. So they offer an array of cutting-edge safety features for the Golf that includes a rear backup camera, blind-spot monitor, rear traffic alert, and Park Pilot that actually helps you get into and out of a parallel parking spot with audible warnings. Other key safety features include anti-lock disc brakes, traction and stability control, and multiple airbags.

As a result, the Golf is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and also receives high test scores from the NHTSA.
