Last redesigned in 2016, when it won the 2016 Motor Trend SUV of the Year Award, the Volvo XC90 is soaring to new and greater heights in 2018. Now in its 2018 form, the XC90 stands out among its many rivals in the highly competitive luxury midsize SUV class once again. And we’re happy to have it onboard at our Roanoke Volvo dealership! Here’s what you need to know about this one-of-a-kind Volvo.
New Standard Features
The popular and spacious 2018 XC90 is loaded with high-tech controls and safety features, all of which are now standard in the 2018 model year, including:
- Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Adaptive cruise control
- Blind spot monitoring
- Rear cross-traffic alert
- Volvo On Call
- Laminated panoramic moonroof
- T8 plug-in powertrain available for all models
Always in the Lap of Luxury
The 2018 XC90 features one of the most luxurious interiors in its class thanks to Volvo’s first-rate materials and a leading-edge, high-tech infotainment system. The reviews at U.S. News and World Report advise midsize SUV consumers that the XC90 is the SUV of choice “if riding in the lap of luxury, having plenty of passenger and cargo space, or getting loads of advanced safety features is on your short list of priorities.” The modern features inside the cabin make for a remarkably refined ride, no matter the destination.
Plenty of Seating Options
The new XC90 seats five adults comfortably in the entry-level T5 model. Upgrading to the T6 and T8 trims, the XC90 adds a third row to comfortably carry up to seven people. All trims—T5 through T8—feature three readily accessible and clearly marked child seat anchors in the second row.
At the top of the line, the T8 Excellence trim prioritizes luxury, allowing you to chauffeur up to four VIP passengers in refined European style. Volvo makes the most of the space freed up by removing that third seat; with the four-seat configuration, the soft perforated leather seatbacks recline, while heating and cooling elements can be adjusted from a handy touchscreen pad. The XC90’s seats also have a soothing massage function for the ultimate luxury-riding experience.
Intimidatingly Exceptional Interior
All XC90 models feature elegant flamed birch and walnut wood trimmings, Nappa leather, metal accents, and unique detailing such as diamond-cut buttons. A modern center stack augments the cabin’s sleek design while providing a good bit of storage and elbow room. With all seats folded down, available cargo space is among the largest of the class at 85.7 cubic feet, outmatching even the Mercedes-Benz GLE.
At the top T8 Excellence trim level, Volvo’s attention to luxury details takes center stage. Interior enhancements include convenient folding tabletops, a temperature-controlled refrigerator compartment for both heating and cooling food and beverages, and a clear partition to protect passengers from the elements when the hatch is open. Swedish crystal glassware (provided to Volvo by Orrefors) is a set of specially commissioned stemmed flutes, cleverly designed without bases to nestle snugly within the matching beverage holders in the cabin and refrigerator.
The T8 Excellence XC90 also features iPads mounted to headrests, where they are tied into the XC90 power system for charging. Innovations such as these are what led Automotive Magazine to remark that the Volvo XC90 has “…technology, luxury, and class to keep everyone else on their heels.”
Nineteen high-fidelity speakers are integrated into the new XC90, allowing for 1400 watts of state-of-the-art amplification and the production of incredible concert-quality sound. Bower and Wilkins modeled the XC90 sound system after the fully immersed acoustical experience at the famed Gothenburg Concert Hall—and it sounds like they succeeded.
Safety and Control
Volvo provides more safety features than any other brand, and the current generation XC90 is one of five Volvo vehicles to receive Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ awards in NHTSA and IIHS crash testing. What’s included in this 2018 Volvo SUV?
- BLIS – This rear-mounted radar system continuously monitors for fast approaching traffic from the rear and alerts the driver when any vehicle—even a motorcycle—is in a blind spot. Active Steering Assist can gently nudge the XC90 back to its lane if the driver is slow to respond.
- Pilot Assist – Semi-autonomous driving with Pilot Assist aids the driver in both highway and high-traffic situations by monitoring and assisting with braking, steering, and acceleration to maintain traffic flow and safe following distances in the lane.
- Sensus Navigation – Cloud-based services and navigation apps are easily accessed and operated with voice commands or steering wheel controls, minimizing distraction to the driver. Real-Time Traffic information helps you avoid jams, and apps can be accessed to share locations, find and pay in advance for parking, or spot the closest Starbucks for a coffee break.
Powertrain and Efficiency
Again, the latest XC90 stands at the head of its class with better fuel economy than the Audi Q7 3.0T, BMW X5 or Mercedes-Benz GLE 350. The 2.0-Liter 4-cylinder engine pumps out 250 ponies and gets 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. Upgrading to the plug-in hybrid engine provides a 5-mpg bump in the XC90’s fuel efficiency rating, leading Car and Driver’s Annie White to remark that the XC90 is “the best thing since pickled herring.”
