According to Safe Kids Worldwide, 73% of car seats are not used or installed correctly which is why we wanted to share some helpful and valuable car seat safety tips with you. Start off your September right by reading our car seat safety tips to ensure your baby’s car seat is installed and functioning the correct way. Whether you are driving to Grandma’s house or your favorite vacation destination, at South Motors Honda, we want your baby to always be as safe as possible in the car.

Finding the Perfect Car Seat

The most important thing to check when buying your baby’s car seat is the label. You must make sure the car seat is appropriate for your child’s age, height, and weight. If you aren’t planning on buying a brand new car seat, we recommend buying the car seat from someone you know. The benefit of this is that then you are aware of the car seat’s history.

Once you have the car seat, the next step is to register it. Registering the car seat allows the manufacturer to contact you if there are any recalls or safety notices about the car seat. Do not forget this step because it is crucial to be aware of any changes so you may make adjustments as needed for your baby’s safety in the car.

Installing Your Car Seat

After you have your registered car seat, the next step is to install it in your vehicle. When installing the car seat, the direction the car seat faces is a large factor in your baby’s safety. It is a common misconception that the baby should face towards the front of the car. In fact, rear-facing seats have the best protection for the baby, as it is better for their back, neck, and head. You should keep your child facing the back of the car until the baby is around two years old.

Securing Your Car Seat

There are two popular tests used to install your baby’s car seat correctly. The first one is the inch test. After your car seat is installed, shake the car seat to see how stable it is. If the car seat moves more than an inch in any direction, then it is not properly installed. We recommend going back and double-checking that everything is secure and pulled tight so that the seat does not move.

The second test is the pinch test. The pinch chest determines if the car seat’s harness is tight enough. To do the pinch test, have the harness buckled, and try to pinch the strap at your baby’s collarbone. If you can grab any material, then the harness is too loose and needs to be tightened until there is no excess material to pinch.

Important Car Safety Reminders

Car seat safety with children is imperative, and even as your children grow up, it is important to keep safety as your number one priority. Therefore, here are some of South Motors Honda’s additional car safety reminders for both yourself and your children.

Before anything else, set a good example for your kids and always buckle up! Buckling your seatbelt is an easy task that makes a significant difference. Buckling your seatbelt is the most effective safety measure you can do to protect yourself and prevent injuries in an accident. At South Motors Honda we ask that you remember to please always buckle up for your safety on the road.

Next, keep in mind that as children grow, their car seat type changes. After your child has outgrown their rear and forward facing car seats, a booster seat comes next. Until the child is big enough to sit in a seat belt properly, they should be kept in a booster seat, and children should always sit in the back seat until they are at least 13 years old to be safe.
