New BMW 5 Series Debuts At Detroit Auto Show

New 2017 5 Series Debuts.

BMW made quite a splash at the recent North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit when they introduced the brilliant new BMW 5 Series to the assembled audience of international automotive journalists and onlookers. BMW also introduced its groundbreaking Concept X2, a remarkable new coupe-styled SAV, (Sport Activity Vehicle) to American audiences for the first time.

The Best Gets Better.

A stalwart of the BMW lineup, the new 5 Series continues its evolution as one of the world’s top-selling luxury sport sedans. According to the automaker, the 5 Series will be packed with BMW’s latest technology and offer a contemporary new look with LED adaptive headlights now standard.

According to BMW, customers will find improved performance, dynamics, and enhanced steering feel. The 7th-generation 5 Series receives a significant weight reduction and new chassis refinements. Two new engines, a turbocharged 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder mill with a peak output of 248 hp and 258 lb.-ft. of torque, and a potent 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder turbocharged engine delivering a hefty 335 horsepower and remarkable 332 lb.-ft. of torque, will be offered.

A redesigned chassis and suspension with optional Adaptive Drive and Dynamic Damper control will further enhance the 5 Series’ world-class ride and handling characteristics.

The 5 Series will also get BMW’s latest iDrive 6.0 touchpad controller coupled to a standard 10.25-inch display with available gesture and intelligent voice control. A multi-color heads up display (HUD), standard two-zone climate control, ambient lighting, and available 16-way front Sport seats with massage function are just some of the many exceptional appointments designed to set the new BMW 5 Series apart.

Dramatic Concept X2 Revealed.

Groundbreaking New “Sport Activity Vehicle” Debuts.

U.S. audiences also got their first glimpse of the groundbreaking new BMW Concept X2. This sleek and seductive compact SAV features a distinctive character incorporating innovative design elements for a sporty, urban-chic appearance.

According to Adrian van Hooydonk, Sr. VP of BMW’s Group Design, “The BMW Concept X2   is a vehicle for active people looking for a combination of enjoyment and practicality. The concept displays a new and exciting facet of the BMW brand within the compact segment.”

The X2‘s bold exterior features a dynamic and rakish coupe-like silhouette. Distinctive blade-like side mirrors, LED headlights with blue x-shaped inserts, no door handles, an inverted split kidney grille, massive 21-inch wheels accentuated by muscular wheel wells, BMW’s characteristic “Hofmeister kink” on the “C” pillar, and large circular exhausts give the vehicle a unique and unmistakable appearance that is at once athletic and powerful. It portends a new design ethos from BMW that may shape future vehicles.

Power will most likely come from BMW’s 2.0-liter, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine offering 228 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque found in BMW’s existing X-Series SAVs. BMW anticipates a market launch of a production version of the Concept X2 sometime in 2018.
