A New Level Of Engineering Innovation

Mazda engineers set the bar high. Their goal was to create a vehicle technology that saves fuel and reduces emissions without sacrificing performance. Because Mazda engineers believe that “if it’s not worth driving, it’s not worth building®,” they set about to solve this problem by taking a fresh approach and scrutinizing every facet and major component in a determined effort to create this harmonious balance between power and efficiency. The result is SKYACTIV® Technology.

Let’s further explore just what exactly SKYACTIV® Technology is and does.

Efficient And Powerful Engines

Getting to the heart of the matter, the essence of SKYACTIV® comes in the form of two remarkable Mazda SKYACTIV®-G 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter gasoline engines. Mazda engineered these engines to maximize power and optimize fuel efficiency. The result is engines that deliver lower and mid-range torque, consume less fuel, and reduce emissions. How was this possible? First, Mazda increased the compression ratio to 13:1 to squeeze more energy from each drop of fuel. Then, Mazda reworked the piston cavity to provide optimal combustion efficiency. A revamped exhaust system, as well as an advanced direct injection system, work to improve performance.

These new SKYACTIV®-G engines demanded an all-new transmission. Thus the SKYACTIV®-Drive, 6-speed automatic transmission was born. Mazda put its best thinking into this new transmission, giving it a new torque converter and clutch for smooth shifts. An advanced control module ensures that the transmission is responsive. The result is an overall gain in fuel efficiency of up to seven percent.

Taking it further is the advanced SKYACTIV®-D 2.2-liter twin-turbo diesel engine. This marvel of efficiency, performance, and design takes advantage of the power and torque characteristics of diesel engines. The SKYACTIV®-D diesel uses twin turbos, cold-starting warm up plugs, lightweight engine parts, and a low compression ratio to provide V8-like power while still meeting stringent emission standards.

New Chassis & Body

But these three outstanding new engines and innovative automatic transmission are only a part of the picture. The next challenge was to engineer a platform that not only offered an exhilarating driving experience but also increased crash safety. The SKYACTIV®-Body and SKYACTIV®-Chassis do just that. Using a higher level of engineering and materials, Mazda engineers improved body rigidity by 30% to improve handling. The chassis is 220 pounds lighter, yet it is stronger than ever for improved agility and stability. Finally, the suspension was redesigned to merge driver and machine into one.

Regenerative Braking Technology

From the beginning, the goal of SKYACTIV® Technology was to harness more horsepower without impacting emissions or fuel economy. This goal was achieved thanks to Mazda’s groundbreaking “i-ELOOP” energy recovery system. This remarkable bit of engineering wizardry recaptures kinetic energy that may have been wasted through a clever regenerative braking system. When you step on the brake, the system generates electricity to power your Mazda’s electronics. This reduces the need for the engine to create and maintain electricity to run a variety of systems, resulting in an up to five percent gain in fuel economy.

As you can see, Mazda’s breakthrough SKYACTIV® Technology achieves new levels of performance, handling, and fuel efficiency. But don’t take our word for it. Autoweek Magazine says, “Mazda tweaked the heck out of internal-combustion processes that have been in place for more than 100 years, coming up with solutions that make you wonder why no one else had done this stuff.”

The end result of all this remarkable leap of engineering innovation is that intangible something that you feel when you get behind the wheel of a new 2015 or 2016 Mazda from Rick Case Mazda Duluth and take it out on the highway. SKYACTIV® Technology is working behind the scenes to improve performance, handling, and fuel efficiency for a driving experience that is simply second-to-none.
