Twenty-six years ago, Mazda introduced the first MX-5 Miata two-door roadster to the world and it immediately made its mark, both on the track and off, as the new definition of what a sporty, fun-to-drive two-seat convertible sports car should be. From its racing-inspired handling to its responsive engine, the original Miata was simply a blast to drive; making it the best-selling two-seat roadster of all time.
It still is, only more so. And the good news is that Mazda’s all-new iconic roadster is set to arrive at Mazda dealerships this summer.
The legend continues
Now in its fourth generation, the all-new 2016 Miata carries on the marque’s proud, race-bred heritage; but with a new level of sophistication, refinement, and technological innovation. Finely tuned to appeal to the spirited driver in all of us, the new Miata knows how to take on the twists and turns of the road less traveled with confident assurance.
Lighter and more nimble than ever
While the overall dimensions of the 2016 Miata closely resemble the original, it’s actually a bit shorter, lighter, and smaller without skimping on interior space. A sloping front hood improves forward visibility which allows a lower driving position. Echoing the brand’s “Kodo – Soul of Motion” design philosophy, the Miata is fluidly sculpted with exquisite proportions. Gone are many of the sharp angles that characterized the previous model. The new iteration also sheds up to 150 pounds of curb weight through a variety of means, from the transmission and extensive use of aluminum to the revived classic-roadster four-bolt lug nuts. The Miata still manages to maintain its 50/50 weight balance; however, the engine now sits behind the front axle, for more of a front, mid-engine layout.
Nimble and surefooted, the 2016 Miata offers responsive steering and precise shifts with short throws from its six-speed manual transmission (an optional automatic will be offered). The U.S. version of the Miata will get Mazda’s proven SKYACTIV 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine, making 155 hp with 148 lb ft of torque. With plenty of grip and predictive handling, it’s sure to continue Miata’s domination on the track through Mazda’s global MX-5 Cup program.
Already getting rave reviews
Recently, automotive journalists from around the world had the opportunity to get behind the wheel of Japanese-spec right-hand-drive 2016 Miatas for extended test drives in the mountains outside of Barcelona, Spain. Here’s what they wrote:
Jack Baruth, who writes for Road & Track Magazine, enthused: “Is it the best Miata ever? Clearly. It’s more than a great Miata. It’s a wake-up call to the people who build cars around the world…But it’s also a wake-up call to drivers around the world…Were this car half as good as it is, it would be good enough – but instead, it’s truly great.”
And Tony Quiroga of Car and Driver Magazine, writes: “…it’s gratifying to know that the Miata continues to stay true to the original…It’s still a small sports car. It’s still big fun. It’s still a toy. Best of all, it still makes us happy.”
We simply couldn’t say it any better.
A special 2016 MX-5 Miata Launch Edition will incorporate a variety of exclusive features. These include a special red paint job with tan leather interior, 17-inch aluminum wheels, heated seats, and an upmarket audio package. The Club Edition is designed to be track-worthy with suspension tweaks, more aggressive wheels and tires, a revamped front airdam, and a trunk-mounted spoiler. Other optional goodies include a limited-slip differential and Bilstein shocks, along with beefier Brembo brakes. For the ultimate Miata experience, the Grand Touring version adds headrest-mounted speakers, Homelink garage opener, rain-sensing wipers, a BOSE 9-speaker audio system, and adaptive headlights.
The all-new 2016 MX-5 Miata Roadster is guaranteed to put more “zoom zoom” in every mile for an exhilarating driving experience that puts the exclamation point on fun.
