For anyone regularly toting passengers or simply looking for a spacious ride, a crossover or SUV can be the perfect complement to everyday life—although finding the right one to fit your style and budget can be difficult given the amount of choices currently on the road. Two of the most popular options on the market, the Nissan Murano and Ford Edge, continue to be near the top of their class, yet stark differences also point out the need for any prospective buyer to do a little homework before signing on a dotted line. To help you decide which is your ideal SUV, here’s a head-to-head comparison of the 2017 Murano and its rival Ford Edge.
Like any vehicle designed for drivers who need to keep passengers in mind, interior functionality is absolutely crucial. With that in mind, Nissan made technology a focal point when constructing its Murano for 2017, adding Apple CarPlay to allow drivers or passengers the ability to connect their Apple devices to the touchscreen. This new feature not only allows for easy access to music, but it also helps drivers to avoid driving distractions, making the task of switching playlists effortless. A new warning system for drowsy drivers also shows the prioritization of safety by Nissan for the 2017 Murano, ensuring that Nissan’s popular SUV is especially great for family road trips.
By comparison, the 2017 Ford Edge didn’t make any noteworthy upgrades from 2016, prompting Edmunds to proclaim that Ford’s SUV is “essentially unchanged from last year.”
Where the Murano really outpaces the Edge is in terms of value, with Edmunds pointing out that Nissan’s crossover is “a smart choice if you want an upscale, V6-powered vehicle without the luxury brand premium.” Thanks to increased interior space, expanded technology and a luxurious overall feel without the sticker shock, the new Murano is one of the standouts for 2017. That’s why the ’17 Murano was named the Best 2-Row SUV for the Money by U.S. News and World Report, outpacing the Ford Edge in value.
Ford’s Edge comes with a similar price tag, though it is a little light in certain areas, including an awkward center console and front seats that are less comfortable than other vehicles in the class.
Standards in Safety:
Although both vehicles do fairly well when it comes to safety, the new Nissan Murano was named a Top Safety Pick by IIHS for 2017 (along with Nissan’s Pathfinder, which is also for sale at our Denville Nissan dealership). With Murano’s recent upgrades, including Siri Eyes Free and an expanded availability of Driver Attention Alert, the Murano continues to build its strong reputation for safety by pushing the technology envelope.
Despite decent overall safety reviews, the 2017 Ford Edge struggles when it comes to front crash tests and front collision prevention, limiting its safety outlook when compared to more advanced vehicles in its class, such as the Murano. That’s right—there’s no IIHS Top Safety Pick label adhered to Ford’s SUV.
Where Murano seems to have one of the biggest advantages in this head-to-head comparison is in design, particularly in the interior.
While detractors point out that the Edge has an abundance of hard plastics on the inside that can be an eyesore, KBB.com salivates over the Murano’s “sweeping curves” that help create a soft appearance and contribute to its visually striking interior. The 2017 Murano also gets high marks thanks to its four Zero Gravity seats, large moonroof, and a sharp exterior that maximizes aerodynamics and airflow, all of which has helped it become one of the most charming and best SUVs on the market.
Despite being similar on the surface, the Murano pulls ahead of the Edge thanks to its terrific overall driving dynamics, substantial safety and technology upgrades, and functionality – all without an inflated price tag. With multiple critics pointing to the Nissan Murano’s luxurious feel without the luxury brand prices, it remains at the top of its class.
