“You have breast cancer.” These are four words that no one wants to hear. But unfortunately, this widespread and random disease strikes hundreds of thousands of women, as well as men, throughout the United States each year. According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 250,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2016. Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among women ages 20 to 59 in the U.S.
Here in Ohio, female breast cancer made up 15% of newly diagnosed cancers from 2000 to 2004. This averages to approximately 8,000 new breast cancer cases diagnosed per year.

One of the most well-known organizations raising awareness and funds to fight breast cancer is the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure®. It is the world’s largest and most successful educational and fundraising event for breast cancer ever created.
Since 1982, the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® has funded more than $889 million in breast cancer research and nearly $2 billion in medical care, support, and community educational efforts.
According to the Susan G. Komen website, 100% of the net proceeds are allocated to the organization’s mission, while 75% of the net income raised stays in local communities to help fund local breast cancer educational, screening, and treatment programs. Continue Reading →
