Light Up the Holidays: Must-See Christmas Events in Albuquerque

The holidays are a great time to explore the spectacular seasonal attractions ABQ has to offer. Are you hosting out-of-town guests this year? Looking for ways to keep your entire family entertained and engaged in the wonder of the season? We’ve got some amazing reasons to pile into your new Nissan and join the greater Albuquerque community for December’s festive events and attractions! Check them out.

Albuquerque BioPark’s River of Lights

Featured among MSN’s “15 Most Spectacular Holiday Light Displays in the U.S.” BioPark’s River of Lights ignites imagination and wonder with more than 500 artistic light displays.

This fundraiser for BioPark began in 1997 and has quickly become one of the areas “must-see” holiday attractions. River of Lights runs from November 25 through December 30 (closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day), with various holiday-themed entertainment, including the Polar Bear Express train tour and educational Holiday Nature Crafts for kids. Doors open at 6 pm each day as BioPark transforms into a sparkling winter wonderland!

ABQ RIDE’s 53rd Annual Luminaria Tour

We know how much you love to drive your Nissan, but this is one event where it’s impossible to keep your eyes on the road. Hop on a nice warm bus for a 45-minute tour of Old Town and the Country Club areas, aglow with luminaria lining the streets. Six tours will originate from the Downtown Convention Center on Christmas Eve. Parking is free at the Convention Center’s eastside parking structure at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and Broadway, with special free parking for disabled tourgoers at the parking lot located immediately north of Civic Plaza, at the NW corner of Third Street and Marquette.

Tickets sell out early, so reserve yours now and enjoy one of New Mexico’s most beloved and beautiful holiday traditions, sponsored by ABQ RIDE!

GLOW: Bridging Time at Santa Fe Botanical Garden

If you’re spending your holidays in Santa Fe, you won’t miss out on all the “big city” holiday light festivals. Santa Fe Botanical Garden hosts the wildly popular and wintery mystical GLOW event December 15 through the 30th (closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day) from 5-8pm.

Come enjoy laser light shows, luminaria, live music and cultural performances at the Botanical Garden’s Pavilion, as well as a New Year’s Eve party just for kids. Children aged 12 and under are free, making GLOW a great way for your family to make holiday memories! If you want to hit all the major holiday displays in Santa Fe, whether you live in ABQ or Bernalillo, this one’s definitely worth the trip.

Check out the GLOW website for more information and to reserve advance tickets

Rio Rancho Winterfest 2017

Come out to Rio Rancho’s Santa Ana Star Center on Saturday, December 16, for this community’s vibrant annual Winterfest and Parade! Festivities begin at noon with a special ice skating at the Santa Ana Star Center. Bring a non-perishable food item in lieu of the usual admission, and you’ll help support local families in need. Meet Santa and Mrs. Claus for photo opportunities, and wrap up your gift shopping at the Holiday Arts and Crafts Fair, featuring handmade gifts, art, and unique crafts. Everybody loves a parade, so head to “Candy Land” around 5 pm as floats take to the streets in a celebration of lights and holiday cheer. What better reason to keep warm blankets, folding chairs and hot cocoa in your Nissan this winter?

The Winterfest 2017 parade and associated activities are coordinated by the Rio Rancho Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department.
