The redesigned 2019 Altima was, in fact, “lit.” It received rave reviews across the board – critics from U.S. News to Car and Driver to MotorTrend put it near the top of their lists – and was one of IIHS’s safest sedans of the year. Then the 2020 Nissan Altima swooped in and stole the show with some well-placed upgrades.
But don’t feel bad for the outgoing Altima; if that midsize sedan was Nissan’s giant leap for man, the new 2020 Altima is the automaker’s mankind-springing flagship.
2019 vs. 2020 Altima: What’s New?
Who says sedans are a dying breed? Not Nissan’s engineers. Following a complete overhaul last year, the 2020 Nissan Altima welcomes a few new additions. The entry Altima S and SR trims now come equipped with a wider range of advanced Nissan Safety Shield 360 safety and driver-assist features.
Nissan Altima S sedans come standard with cruise control, Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking, RearView Monitor, Intelligent Driver Alertness. Optional on the S trim are features like Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Rear Sonar Sensors, High Beam Assist, and Rear Automatic Braking. The Altima SR models standardize all optional S-model features.
Nissan Altima Platinum, SV, and SL models also receive some goodies, such as memory side-view mirrors and glossy piano-black interior trimmings.
Perhaps best of all is the new Altima’s starting price: at just $24,100 MSRP, the 2020 Altima costs one measly Benjamin Franklin more than the previous 2019 model. Try to find a better deal on a new car—we dare you.
Best 2020 Altima Features
Of course, returning to the 2020 Altima lineup are last year’s all-stars.
All-wheel drive and the world’s first variable compression-turbo engine (248 hp and 273 lb.-ft. of torque) are lacing up their sneakers again. These 2 Altima SR features aren’t available in rivals like the Honda Accord or Toyota Camry. With a sport-tuned, all-wheel-drive SR, you’ll be hitting 60 mph in under 6 seconds, which is far quicker than the 2.0L Accord or comparable Camry.
Speaking of the Altima SR, Car and Driver’s critics also note that it has “…more cornering grip than the all-new 2019 BMW 330i xDrive.” At nearly half the price? Sold.
The VC-Turbo™ engine also pushes EPA-estimated MPG into overdrive. Rated at 28 mpg city and 39 mpg highway, the all-wheel-drive Altima is among the most fuel-efficient, non-hybrid sedans in its class.
ProPILOT Assist returns to the court. Semi-autonomous in theory, fully awesome in practice, ProPILOT Assist takes the tedium out of Kansas City’s sometimes-chaotic top-and-go traffic. It sets a safe following distance between you and the car in front, and can even brake and accelerate from zero as traffic conditions change. This fantastic driver-assist feature even centers the Altima in its lane.
Features like standard USB Type-C ports, Easy-Fill Tire Alert, key-activated remote start, and a power driver’s seat – all of which are not standard on the Toyota Camry – come back, too.
