Where to See Christmas Lights in Kansas City

No holiday season is complete until you’ve taken a nighttime drive to check out all the amazing Christmas light displays in Kansas City. There’s just something about all those holiday decorations and lights that make you feel giddy, right? Must be the magic of the season, we suppose. Here are some of our favorite places in Kansas City to see Christmas lights.

Best Kansas City Christmas Lights

The Country Club Plaza

There isn’t a season when the 15-block stretch of Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza isn’t beautiful, but the area really outdoes itself during the holidays. For nearly 90 years, the owners drape hundreds of thousands of lights over the Spanish-inspired buildings, earning the area a reputation as one of the most beautiful holiday light shows in Kansas City, let alone the country.

All parking garages are accessible, and we recommend enjoying the holiday decorations by taking advantage of one of the locally owned and operated horse-drawn carriages that patrol the 15-block span. The Country Club Plaza turned on the lights during a special ceremony on Nov. 23, 2018, and won’t turn them off until the middle of January. Lights shine from 5 p.m. to 3 a.m.

Downtown Overland Park

Always stunning, Downtown Overland Park truly makes itself known when the holiday season comes around. During December weekends, it transforms from a pretty city park into a breathtaking winter wonderland. The best way to enjoy these Overland Park Christmas lights is by parking your car and walking the park’s multiple winding trails, which are lined with candles. Things you’ll enjoy during your stroll through Downtown Overland Park include carolers, lots of festive lights, Santa Claus, and hayrides.

After taking in the holiday decorations in Downtown Overland Park, make the short trip to nearby Marriott Kansas City Downtown, where you can enjoy the synchronized 30,000-light Christmas show. Each year, the Marriott lights up in celebration of the Salvation Army’s Annual Christmas Campaign.

Longview Lake Park

For over 25 years, Longview Lake Park has been brightening up the holidays for visitors with its annual Christmas in the Park light show. The holiday show features more than 300,000 lights and 175 animated figures, which are aglow each night from December 6 through December 31. And because it’s a drive-through Christmas light display, it’s the perfect event to save for a chilly night with the kids.

Legends Outlet

Whether you have some last-minute shopping or need to get your share of festive spirit in before December 25, you should head out to Legends Outlets. They have a stunning 45-foot Christmas tree that takes your breath away. Thousands of Christmas lights are perfectly synchronized to your favorite holiday music, as well.

Shawnee Station Holiday Light Tour

There’s nothing nicer than being chauffeured around Lansing to celebrate the holidays! On December 21 and December 23, vehicles depart from the station for a slow drive to the best holiday light shows in Shawnee. Since you’re not driving, you can sit back, sip hot chocolate, and take in the beauty of your surroundings while someone else worries about traffic. The entire Shawnee Christmas lights tour takes 3 hours to complete and costs range from $39 to $165. The tour leaves Shawnee Station at 5:30, so be sure to get there on time.
