The 2019 Truck Championship: Chevy Silverado vs. RAM 1500

It’s definitely the (truck) battle of the century.

Yup, we’re talking about the all-new 2019 Silverado 1500 vs. the 2019 RAM 1500. On one side of the ring, we have the Silverado, a formidable next-generation Chevy truck. On the other side of the ring, we have the rugged RAM, Chrysler’s newest pride and joy. Both claim first-in-class capabilities for 2019, but only one can win this heavyweight contest. Who will it be?

Towing and Trailering Features (aka. Why We Buy Big Trucks)

2019 Chevy Silverado 1500: The all-new Silverado has a maximum payload of 2,700 pounds and a maximum towing capacity of 12,950 lbs. And that’s not all: the Silverado’s Advanced Trailering Package, which includes the all-new Auto Electric Parking Brake Assist, is standard on the LTZ and High Country trims, and available on LT, RST, and LT Trail Boss models.

2019 Chrysler RAM 1500: Chrysler’s newest RAM 1500 has a maximum payload of 2,300 pounds and a maximum towing capacity of 12,750 lbs.

Winner: The 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500, hands down.

Size: Is Bigger Really Better?

2019 Chevy Silverado 1500: The new Silverado is definitely a formidable beast. At 147.4 inches, it has a wheelbase that’s almost 3.9 inches longer than the outgoing Silverado model. Add an overall length of at least 1.6 inches, and voila! You’ve got cargo dimensions and interior measurements that make grown men weep with joy. The Silverado has an in-floor cargo box length of 79.44 inches, a box width of 71.40, and cargo volume of 71.7 ft³, as well.

And that’s not all. This behemoth is encased in an exterior that weighs 450 pounds less than other crew cab V-8 models! For front legroom, the generous 44.5-inch space can’t be beat.

2019 Chrysler RAM 1500: The new RAM is a magnificent specimen. Pound for pound, it proudly rivaled the 2019 Silverado at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show. The all-new RAM 1500 is even 225 pounds lighter than its predecessor.

However, its wheelbase measures in at 144.5 inches, slightly reducing the RAM’s cargo dimensions and interior measurements. It has an in-floor cargo box length of 76.3 inches, a box width of 66.4 inches, and a cargo volume of just 61.5 ft³. Meanwhile, the front leg room measures in at 40.9 inches. All measurements dwarf in comparison to the Silverado’s stature.

Winner: The 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500.

Engine Options: Where The Big Boys Roam

2019 Chevy Silverado 1500: Look out! The 2019 Silverado will premier new 5.3L and 6.2L V-8 engines with an industry-first Dynamic Fuel Management system (DFMS). This advanced cylinder-deactivation technology allows the Silverado’s engine to operate in 17 varied cylinder modes. Contrast this with Active Fuel Management, which only alternates between 4 or 8 cylinder modes.

Here’s how DFMS works: A sophisticated controller monitors the accelerator pedal’s movements. Then, it calculates the precise number of cylinders needed to meet torque requirements. The result is substantial fuel savings and increased power at crucial moments. Don’t believe us? The 5.3 L V-8 is SAE-certified at 355 hp and a phenomenal 383 lb-ft of torque. Meanwhile, the 6.2 L is SAE-certified at 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque.

Want more options? The new Silverado is also available with an all-new Duramax 3.0L inline-six turbo-diesel. Yummy.

2019 Chrysler RAM 1500: The redesigned RAM is the so-called king of technological innovation. Pundits love the RAM 1500’s multiple engine configurations. The 3.6 L PENTASTAR® V6 Engine with ETorque is standard on most trims, while the 5.7 L HEMI® V8 Engine With ETorque gives the RAM 1500 395 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque. However, it lacks the same oomph as the Silverado in terms of performance. A decent try, RAM….

Winner: The 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500, in terms of sheer engine power and capacity.

Bed Capacity Makes A Truck

2019 Chevy Silverado 1500: The all-new Silverado offers the revolutionary Durabed, which boasts best-in-class cargo box volume in the truck segment. Chevy engineers tout the 23% increase in bed space, with the short-box offering 63 ft³ of volume. This increase is substantially (20%) larger other short box measurements.

The 2019 Silverado engineers also gave the steel bed floor a serious makeover. They used a higher-grade steel to increase the Silverado’s bed yield strength by an estimated 160 megapascals of pressure. It may sound like alien gibberish, but this upgrade makes the Silverado the Hulk of full-sized pickups in terms of strength and mass. The new Silverado also has 12 fixed tie-downs, rated up to 500 lbs. each.

2019 Chrysler RAM 1500: The all-new RAM offers 61.5 ft³ of conventional cargo bed volume and the quintessential Mopar® Bed Step, which provides easy access to the cargo bed. You can control the bed’s LED lights from your key fob button, a decent convenience when you’re loading at night. The 2019 RAM also boasts the RamBox bed divider, which lets you create mini compartments to extend your storage space. But it lacks the space to compete with the Silverado when you really need to pack the bed to the brim.

Winner: The 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 is a bigger, brawnier truck.
