Chevrolet amped up the excitement at the 2016 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit with the high-voltage debut of the technologically advanced 2017 Chevy Bolt electric vehicle and all-new 2017 Chevy Cruze Hatchback.

Mary Barra, Chairman and CEO of General Motors, Alan Batey, President of GM North America, and Mark Reuss, GM’s Executive VP, Global Product Development shared the stage to introduce the new 2017 Chevy Bolt and 2017 Chevy Cruze Hatchback to the assembled audience of news media and automotive industry executives at the world’s premier international automotive exhibition.

A Sporty New Hatch

Batey kicked off Chevy’s press event, stating that, since its introduction in 2009, the Chevy Cruze has become the automaker’s best-selling passenger car worldwide and remains so today. “The all-new Cruze Hatchback takes everything that’s great about our Cruze sedan and makes it even more sporty,” stated Batey. Already a very popular seller in Europe, the new Cruze hatchback, bringing it to the U.S. market for the first time, “takes Chevrolet into an entirely new segment, further expanding our portfolio in the U.S.,” noted Batey.

Amazing 200 Mile Range

After the introduction of the 2017 Cruze Hatchback, Mary Barra and Mark Reuss rolled onto the stage in the groundbreaking new 2017 Chevy Bolt EV. Calling it “the first EV that cracks the code of long range and affordable price.”

“Exactly one year after we showed the Bolt EV concept right here, we now have the production version on this stage,” enthused Reuss. “This is the first architecture specifically designed for electric vehicles since the EV-1,” Reuss added.

A Showcase of Cutting-Edge Technology

First seen at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas at the beginning of the year, the new 2017 Bolt drew attention with its ability to go up to 200 miles on a single charge. Not only will the new Bolt feature the latest in cutting-edge electric propulsion technology, but it will also be a rolling showcase of Chevy’s most forward-thinking connectivity advancements. “The Bolt EV is capable of using the latest mobile app technology to enable car sharing, advanced GPS routing and gamification, all designed to enhance the ownership experience now and into the future,” stated Barra.

According to Chevrolet, the Bolt will offer “smart, personalized solutions for managing the driving experience.” The Bolt is projected to be able to assure accurate driving range based on the time of day, road topography, weather, and the owner’s unique driving habits. Additionally, the Bolt will use Bluetooth® low-energy technology to help minimize power drain.

Using Chevy’s OnStar® 4G LTE technology, the 2017 Bolt will be a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot, providing access to apps and Internet-based services via high-speed wireless connection. Other connectivity and infotainment features include:

  • 10.2″ MyLink color touch-screen display featuring a customizable, widget-based “flip-board style” operation
  • Rear camera mirror provides a wide-angle view of the environment behind the vehicle.
  • Surround Vision projects a bird’s-eye view of what’s around the Bolt EV for improved safety during low-speed driving and when parking.
  • “Gamification” – In the future, Bolt EV owners will be able to “compete” by comparing driving styles to determine who is driving most efficiently.

Meet the MyChevrolet Mobile App

Perhaps one of the most exciting connectivity features found in the new Chevy Bolt, is the all-new MyChevrolet Mobile App. This innovative app simplifies life behind the wheel, combining important owner and vehicle information and functions, such as:

  • Vehicle charge status
  • OnStar Map service
  • Remote start
  • Cabin pre-conditioning
  • Owner’s manual information
  • Dealer service scheduling
  • EV navigation mapping

Spirited Acceleration & Roomy Interior

Motor Trend’s Frank Markus briefly tested the new Bolt at CES and said that “…the front motor pulls the Bolt away from a stop or a corner with EV-grade authority.” The Bolt’s “one-pedal driving” engages when the car is put in “Low” range, allowing you to take your foot off the accelerator and let the Bolt’s regenerative braking slow the car to a stop without using the brakes. A paddle on the left side of the wheel increases the regenerative capacity, slowing the vehicle further.

Designing the Bolt from the ground up as an EV allowed Chevy engineers to increase the car’s torsional stiffness by 25% which, according to Motor Trend’s Markus is “…a luxury that’s impossible when electrifying an existing gas car…” An industry-first, ultra-slim front seat design contributes to increased rear-seat room. The Bolt’s 94.4 cubic feet of interior volume is reported to be larger than that of a Nissan Leaf EV.

The Future Is Coming Soon

With its amazing 200-mile range and an array of new high-tech features, the brilliant new 2017 Chevy Bolt demonstrates Chevy’s leadership in electric-vehicle technology that will take drivers further than ever before. With an estimated net price of around $30,000 after federal tax credits, the electrifying new Bolt should arrive at Chevy showrooms later this year.
