The Best Winter Trucks for Kansas City Drivers

When winter snow and ice arrive in the greater Kansas City area, you want the peace of mind that comes from having a reliable winter truck. From Lee’s Summit to Independence, MO, the area is in a snowy warzone where Arctic cold and warm Gulf air do battle throughout the winter. The fact that Kansas City averages 20 inches of snow each year is only part of the story, too. Even on cold, sunny days, motorists often have drifting snow, black ice, and general slippery conditions to contend with. That’s why driving a winter-ready pickup truck is so very important.

Year after year, Chevrolet delivers some of the best trucks for winter driving. For example, in 2018, Chevy placed two pickups on Autobytel’s “10 Best Trucks for Snow and Ice” list: the Silverado and Colorado. Before winter makes the roads chaotic, consider buying or leasing either of these amazing pickups at our Lee’s Summit Chevy truck dealership.

2019 Chevy Silverado

For many years, the Silverado has been one of America’s most popular pickups. In 2019, nothing’s changed.

The 2019 Chevy Silverado truck lineup includes the 1500 (½ ton), 2500 (¾ ton) and 3500 (1 ton) series. The all-new Silverado 1500 comes with five engine options, including a new a 2.7L turbocharged four-cylinder and a new high-torque 3.0L inline-six turbo-diesel. If towing capacity is important to you, consider versions of the 2500HD and 3500HD that can tow more than 14,000 pounds.

Edmunds notes that certain versions of the 2019 Silverado are 450 pounds lighter than their predecessors, and the wheelbase is 3.9 inches longer. The all-new 2019 takes an already capable winter vehicle to a whole new level. Better yet, it enjoys a five-star NHTSA safety rating.

2019 Chevy Colorado

Many individuals who want a great truck for winter driving don’t necessarily need a full-size pickup. For them, the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado is fine, dandy, and still beefy enough to tow up to a best-in-class 7,700 pounds, according to Car and Driver. The Duramax 2.8L Turbo-Diesel engine offers best-in-class torque, as well. We guess there’s a reason why Business Insider named the Colorado 4×4 as the best mid-size pickup for winter driving.

The 2019 Chevy Colorado comes standard with all-speed traction control. A ZR2 adds two extra inches of ground clearance along with front and rear locking differentials. You’ll find the same heated options on a Chevy Colorado as you do on its bigger sibling, the Silverado — heated seats, steering wheel, and side-view mirrors.

Chevrolet Colorado also adds more front and rear USB ports along with an upgraded Infotainment system. A high-definition rearview camera is also new. Choose lockable differentials for added performance in rough weather and rugged terrain. NHTSA’s overall safety rating is four stars out of five.

Why Chevy?

For the best driving performance in wintery conditions, configure a Chevy Silverado or Colorado with features like four-wheel-drive and full traction control, automated braking and locking differentials. A four-wheel-drive with an electronic locking rear differential keeps the rear wheels working together in the toughest conditions, making the Chevy Colorado and Silverado essentially your get-out-of-winter-trouble trucks. Heated mirrors help you retain the visibility you need in extreme weather. Transitioning from freezing cold to a heated seat and steering wheel is a real plus, as well. In addition to standard 4×4 models, consider the high-performance, off-road versions of these popular Chevy trucks.
