Do Critics Love the 2017 Chevy Tahoe? (Spoiler: Absolutely!)

Big. Bigly. Bigliest. The all-new 2017 Chevy Tahoe is a more than capable people shipper and boat hauler. Built on the Silverado truck platform, the Tahoe is a balanced ride, offering a max trailering limit of 8,600 pounds, 94.7 cubic-foot cargo area (to the first row), and an 8-passenger seating capacity with enough head- and legroom to match. Could that by why it’s one of the best-reviewed full-size SUVs on the market? Let’s see what the critics have to say about this bona fide star of the SUV world.

Kelley Blue Book Shows the Tahoe Love

“The 2017 Tahoe is no dinosaur. Chevy pulled out all the stops in technology, style and performance, and the result pushes the limits of what is possible with this type of architecture.”

Dominating the SUV market comes easy to the Tahoe, almost as if “#winning” were woven into its DNA. Its style, passenger space, and new-age tech makes it a must-buy crossover whose truck-like traits are an added perk. And agrees, stating that it’s “a pleasure to live with the big fella, whether you’re just picking the kids up from school, or towing your boat to the lake for a weekend of fun.”

Part SUV and part pickup, the 2017 Tahoe makes no argument that it sits squarely between the two. Its rear axle controls cabin sway and lean like that of a truck, while shocks help keep the bumps to a minimum like only a crossover could. Still, the SUV’s Silverado genetics are camouflaged well behind a stylish wrapper—the only similarities come from the Chevy logo emblazoned on the grille and its lifted hood—that features sculpted flanks, LED headlights, a wider stance, and power running boards, to name a few.

“With new technology and features designed to keep it on top, the 2017 Tahoe is the best the Tahoe has ever been.” Well said, KBB.

Car & Driver’s Review

“The Tahoe is a full-size, body-on-frame boat hauler that rules the SUV world, with loads of tech to keep you safer on the road.”

Car and Driver praises the Tahoe for its innovativeness, stating that the SUV’s “variety of high-tech safety and assist features have been expanded and refined for 2017.” First and foremost is Chevy’s Teen Driver, which comes standard on all Tahoe trims and allows parents to set speed limits, alerts, and reminders for their “I can’t believe how old they’re getting” driver.

The Tahoe Premier also comes with a slew of new additions, including a standard 8-inch MyLink touchscreen with navigation, 10-speaker premium Bose audio system, and compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Available features include 4G LTE Wi-Fi, driver-side heads-up display, 9-inch rear entertainment screen with Blu-Ray.

Safety is never a concern for the Tahoe owner. Higher trims come with forward-collision warnings, blind-zone alerts, lane-keeping assistance, rear-traffic alerts, automatic emergency brakes, and adaptive cruise control. The Tahoe’s Magnetic Ride Control helps make it as manageable at highway speeds as it is in the parking lot, too. Add on the effect of a quiet cabin, and you’ve got a tasty full-sized SUV stew brewing.

U.S. News’s #1 Large SUV for Families

“Inside the Tahoe, Chevy uses materials that are much better than what you’ll find in rival large SUVs, like the Ford Expedition. Some might even feel it nears the fine tuning of the Cadillac Escalade, the Tahoe’s luxury sibling.”

Standard front-row bucket seats offer ample amounts of comfort for long road trips, and second-row headroom bests most rivals in the class. Heated seats aren’t reserved for drivers and passengers, either; all mid-row passengers can also light a fire under their you-know-whats with upgraded heated and ventilated leather bucket seats.

For added convenience, the Tahoe can be equipped with power-folding rear and middle seats, allowing owners to drop them flat within a finger’s snap. Power liftgates come standard on all Tahoe models above the base LS trim, and the high-end Premier even comes with a hands-free option that’s ideal for any owner whose on-the-go nature needs nurturing (you know who you are).

Making the grade isn’t enough for the 2017 Tahoe—it’s also taken out its competitors along the way to the top of U.S. News’ rankings. Their quote that sums up the Tahoe best? “…None of its rivals come as close at covering all the bases of what shoppers are looking for in a large SUV.” (Buh-bye, Expedition.)
