As your local Chevy dealer near Kansas City, McCarthy Chevrolet Lee’s Summit is pleased to spread the word that Chevrolet will begin offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on 14 of its 2016 models. The first car to have this capability is the all-new and completely redesigned 2016 Chevy Cruze. Chevy will now offer more vehicles with these features than any other automaker.

Chevrolet continues to lead the way with this latest advancement in mobile connectivity. The automaker was the first car manufacturer to install standard 4G LTE WI-FI across its entire lineup. This breakthrough allows users to connect up to seven wireless devices using their Chevy vehicle as a wireless hotspot. The debut of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay puts Chevy even farther ahead of the competition in terms of advanced technology.

Mary Barra, CEO of General Motors, recently commented on this new customer-driven innovation during an appearance at the Code Conference 2015, a gathering of some of the top minds in technology. “For most of us, our smartphones are essential,” Barra stated. “Partnering with Apple and Google to offer CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility across the widest range of models in the industry is a great example of how Chevrolet continues to democratize technology that’s important to our customers.”

Android Auto and Apple CarPlay will work seamlessly with Chevy’s user-friendly MyLink infotainment system. However, there are some differences. Certain models using the system’s seven-inch touchscreen display get both the Apple and Android features. Chevy cars and trucks using the available 8-inch MyLink touchscreen just get Apple CarPlay, as Chevy works together with Android to roll out their service on the larger screens. (See list below.)

The addition of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will give Chevy owners the opportunity to take advantage of the power of their smartphones to enjoy music, messaging, navigation, and other functions via third-party apps. Additionally, using Chevy’s built-in 4G LTE WI-FI will help reduce data costs as well.

The phones need to plug into the vehicle using a USB cable, which increases battery life and improves bandwidth. The vehicle’s seven or eight-inch touchscreen is used to access the smartphone’s various features, like music and navigation. Voice commands are an important safety feature of this new connectivity. They allow drivers verbal communication with the system while keeping their eyes on the road. It’s especially helpful when using Google Maps, Google Now, Google Play Music, podcasts, and other functions.

Apple CarPlay allows users to make calls, send and receive texts, use Siri voice commands, access third-party apps, and more. Users need to have either an iPhone 5 or newer model, or a smartphone with Android’s Lollipop 5.0 OS.
