A Closer Look at the Electrifying 2017 Chevy Volt

Now in its second year of production, the second generation Chevy Volt has evolved to become a quiet yet exciting compact EV. Last year’s Volt was sold based on availability, but this year’s model hit showroom floors all over the country, including our Chevy dealership near Kansas City. What else does the 2017 Chevrolet Volt offer?

  • The body structure has changed, offering more traditional exterior styling and a more comfortable cabin.
  • A 1.5L engine is quieter and can be filled up with regular unleaded fuel, a first for the Volt (the previous model required premium gasoline).
  • The all-electric range has been improved significantly, from 38 miles to 53.
  • New options include adaptive cruise control and enhanced auto emergency braking.

Two New Volt Trims

The 2017 Volt is available in two main trims: LT and Premier.

The Volt LT comes with standard features such as keyless entry and ignition, remote start, LED headlights, OnStar with Wi-Fi hotspots, an 8-inch touchscreen display, MyLink infotainment, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and automatic climate control. Potential Volt drivers can also opt for upgrades like heated side mirrors, steering wheels, and front seats, leather upholstery, and an 8-speaker Bose sound system.

Move into the upgraded Volt Premier, and you’ll receive an auto-dimming rearview mirror, wireless charging station, GPS navigation, parking assistance, and heated rear seats. A Driver Confidence bundle pairs blind-spot alerts, lane departure warnings, and rear cross-traffic monitoring with the Volt. A Driver Confidence 2 package adds even more, including forward collision warnings, low-speed emergency brakes, lane departure mitigation, and auto headlights.

Incredible Fuel Economy

106 MPGe with a 420-mile range? Yes, please.

Chevy stepped up their game with the 2017 Volt, a plug-in EV-hybrid that can go 1,000 miles between fill-ups. At that range, you can head to Denver or Dallas from your Lawrence, KS home without stopping for fuel. Its 53-mile EV range is also exceptional for its class, bested by only a few full-EV models. What’s more, a full battery charge takes under 5 hours with Chevy’s 240V charging bay, meaning all you’ll have to do to prep for your Monday-to-Friday morning commute in to Kansas City is keep the Volt plugged in overnight.

For pure and unadulterated electric prowess without “range-based limitations,” the Volt is a grand slam. Its success stems from innovative hybrid-electric motors. The twin electric engines produce 149 horsepower—that’s more than enough for daily city travels—that’s backed by an 18.4 kWh battery pack that can be partially charged by the car’s Regen on Demand™ system. This regenerative braking system stores unused energy when the vehicle comes to stops, and it’s one of our Olathe Chevy dealers’ favorite features. We’re certain it’ll be one of yours, too.

Advanced Technology & Safety

For a car its size, the 2017 Volt is certainly no slouch when it comes to safety and the latest tech. It includes a brilliant touchscreen with MyLink, USB ports, high fidelity Bose audio system, simple Bluetooth pairing, smartphone app integration, and voice recognition software to make your life easy as pie. The Wi-Fi hotspot is a nice touch and emphasizes the Volt’s ability to take long trips.

Three driving modes are available with the tap of a button. In Sport mode, the Volt gets a markedly sharper throttle response. The Mountain mode sets aside spare battery energy to assist in climbing steep hills. A unique Hold mode is essentially the Regen on Demand™ system on steroids, and it’s great for pure-electric driving in downtown Kansas City or Lenexa.

Chevy’s Volt also earns top safety grades, including an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award and a 5-star overall rating by the NHTSA. Standard safety features on the 2017 Chevrolet Volt include an HD rearview camera, Teen Driver, OnStar Emergency Services, 10 air bags with smart sensors, and great outward visibility. Optional safety features are included when bundling the Premier with the aforementioned Driver Confidence packages.
