In the span of only a few decades, we’ve seen technology expand into avenues we’d never have imagined. No longer are we enticed by the year’s newest vehicles with 6-CD changers or built-in AUX inputs. In their places are features like on-the-go Wi-Fi, smartphone integration, and improved EV batteries. Oh, and let’s not forget self-driving cars, which were too futuristic to be featured in The Jetsons.
At the helm of this automotive push into the future is Chevrolet, one of America’s most innovative vehicle manufacturers. Current Chevy technology has already put the newest 2016 and 2017 models in the limelight, and with plans to create even more, the future is brighter than ever for the industry. Here are but a few of the newest and upcoming technological advancements that Chevy brings to the table.
Rear Seat Reminder
With growing concerns over infant, toddler, and pet deaths caused by being left in hot cars, Chevy has developed an alert system that reminds drivers to check the rear seat before they exit their vehicles. As the industry’s first safety system, Rear Seat Reminder works by monitoring and activating when it detects the rear doors being utilized. When the vehicle is turned off, five warning chimes will sound, followed by a warning message on the driver information hub, to alert the driver that they should take a look-see in the back seat.
Chevrolet is set to introduce Rear Seat Reminder in most every one of its models by 2018, starting with the 2017 Cruze, Malibu, Tahoe, Suburban, Silverado, and Colorado.
Android Auto & Apple CarPlay
Starting in 2016, Chevrolet became the global leader for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility by offering the tech within 14 Chevy models. Pair your iPhone or Android device seamlessly to your car and MyLink display, and you’ll have access to apps, texts, navigation and maps, music, and more.
Chevy’s Teen Driver
This industry-first technology gives you more control over how your teen drives, even when you aren’t in the passenger seat. With Teen Driver, you can set up the following alerts and limits:
- Speeding Alerts
- Audio Volume Limits
- Seat Belt Warnings
- Auto-Enable Safety Tech
Teen Driver also tracks your teenager’s driving performance, which you can review at any time with the in-vehicle report card.
This incredible safety tech will be built into 10 new Chevy models in 2017, including the Chevrolet Bolt, Camaro, Colorado, Cruze, Malibu, Silverado, Silverado HD, Suburban, Tahoe, and Volt.
Ample 4G LTE Wi-Fi Availability
Chevrolet offers one of the largest 4G vehicle lineups in the market, so you can stay connected no matter the road you take. Whether you’re on the interstate in Kansas City or taking a backroad in Lenexa, KS, or beyond, Chevy’s 4G Wi-Fi allows you to access phone apps, stream music or YouTube videos, work on a laptop, browse your Facebook feed, and more. Chevy’s built-in Wi-Fi also allows you to connect up to seven devices so that everyone can stay linked to the outside world.
Chevy has also worked in the OnStar RemoteLink mobile app into its network of over 3 million vehicles. This app allows users to operate their vehicles on-the-go and comprehensively review their vehicle’s health.
OnStar Proactive Alerts
Chevy has recently introduced Proactive Alerts, the industry’s first and only predictive maintenance software, which will notify owners of potential problems and allow them to seek service proactively. Proactive Alerts will monitor the health of everything from your battery to fluid levels, and then utilize OnStar service to request maintenance. Plans are in the works for Proactive Alerts to monitor even more vehicle systems and components and expand to the entire Chevrolet lineup.
myChevrolet Mobile App
With the myChevrolet app, you can make your smartphone or mobile device into your car’s command hub. Take control of certain vehicle features from your upstairs bathroom or when you’re at the airport in Beirut—yes, you can control your car from just about anywhere you have online connectivity. Features that can be controlled include remote-start, door locks, parking reminders, diagnostic information, lights, car horn, and Wi-Fi settings.
With myChevrolet, you can even request roadside assistance, access your owner’s manual, and schedule service at our auto service shop or another preferred Chevy dealer anywhere you are. This innovative Chevrolet technology just shows how convenient the future could be.
Chevrolet and GM have partnered with SAE International to sponsor the collegiate-level AutoDrive Challenge™, the three-year competition that seeks to find the most creative minds of the next generation of engineers. Students participating in this contest will be provided a Chevrolet Bolt EV and are tasked with developing it into a fully autonomous self-driving vehicle. Modes of transportation will forever change with the help of Chevy and these brilliant young adults.
One-Pedal Drive Mode
Built into the new 2017 Chevy Bolt EV, the one-pedal driving mode maximizes the vehicle’s total range and is entirely customizable. Using regenerative braking technology—this tech allows the battery pack to capture energy caused by deceleration—the one-pedal driving experience increases range by up to 5%. Paired with software and passive controls, regenerative braking also gives drivers the ability to stop the Bolt without applying any pressure to the brake pedal.
It’s perhaps the first of its kind and should pave the way for self-driving vehicles to become even more efficient.
As one of the cleanest renewable fuel sources in the U.S., E85 ethanol is made from grain products and forest and municipal waste. This biofuel burns cleaner than typical gasoline, allowing us to rely less on oil. Chevrolet understands the importance of moving away from petroleum and offers more E85 FlexFuel vehicles than any other American manufacturer. From XFE and Eco models of your favorite Chevy cars and SUVs to a variety of hybrids and plug-in EVs, the Chevy lineup of eco-friendly vehicles is unmatched.
2018 Chevrolet Equinox
Redesigned from front to back, the 2018 Equinox is set to make a splash. Newly added features for this model year include forward collision warning, low-speed automatic braking, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, side blind spot detection, rear cross traffic alerts, four-camera surround vision, and a safety alert seat, which vibrates to warn the driver of potential on-road issues. The 2018 Equinox will also sport a more robust central stack of knobs, controls, and a screen with Chevy MyLink infotainment.
