What’s New, Malibu?

Just a year removed from last year’s complete redesign, the 2017 Malibu adds a 9-speed automatic and Sport package for Premier trims, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on the LS and LT models. Chevy dropped the 2LT trim in favor of the upgraded Premier—and the Malibu is all the better for it.

Style, Comfort, & Features: Charming in All the Right Places

What happens when a handsome Impala is merged with a compact Cruze? The result would resemble the 2017 Chevy Malibu, with its long new frame, well-composed cabin, and ample amounts of features.

On the outside, the Malibu mimics the Impala’s size, making good use of its lighter steel body and adding more than two inches of length over the midsize sedan’s last generation. The balanced front-to-back look starts with the roofline—it boldly stretches down into a narrower and lower nose, which features twin grilles split by the Chevy emblem. Sophisticated waves flow along the doors and all the way to the taillights. The trunk lid has a subtle lip, giving the Malibu a more athletic appearance.

The charm from the outside seeps into the interior, where soft-touch surfaces and trimmings are just the tip of the iceberg. The driver-side power-adjustable seats are positioned low to the floor to optimize driving dynamics. The dashboard is also lower to the floor, opening up the cabin to improve frontward visibility. Knee-height pads, comfortable lumbar support, and tall front seats are opulent touches, while a large back seat with 38.1 inches of rear leg room rivals even its big brother Impala.

The 2017 Chevy Malibu LS comes with a standard 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, OnStar with Wi-Fi, Teen Driver, a rearview camera, and more. At the top of the ticket is Chevy’s MyLink infotainment system (paired with the touchscreen), which rewards drivers with a highly functional and aesthetically pleasing layout. Large knobs below the touchscreen are always within reach, but it’s the robust user interface and tablet-like appearance that makes the new Malibu one for the ages. The 2017 Malibu Premier model bumps up the level of practicality even higher with a standard 8-inch touchscreen, premium audio, and rear USB ports.

Best-In-Class Performance

Standard in the 2017 Malibu L and LS models is a 1.5-liter turbo-4 engine that has no problem returning up to 36 mpg on the highway. High in torque, the engine can tackle inclines or lane changes effortlessly. A weight loss of about 300 pounds helps the Malibu get a grip on its handling, offering a smoother and supremely composed ride no matter the road conditions. In fact, ride quality is truly one of the Malibu’s biggest strengths, thanks in part to an incredible suspension that absorbs bumps and potholes before they ever reach the cabin.

Malibu Premier models are fitted with a 2.0-liter turbocharged 5-cylinder that gets 33 highway mpg, aligning with the segment’s best fuel-efficient competitors. Peppy and powerful, the Premier is made better by nimbleness and steering dynamics comparable to some high-end sports sedans and coupes. Even at higher speeds, sharp turns are no match for the fun-to-drive Malibu.

Best yet is the 2017 Malibu Hybrid and its dual electric motors and 1.8-liter engine. It tops out at 49 mpg in the city, making it one of the industry’s top hybrid family sedans. Acceleration is quick and braking feels organic, never pervasive. The engine(s) provide equally natural deceleration when needed. Active noise cancellation suppresses road vibration, with only slight whispers from the gas-engine breaking through.

The Malibu Keeps You Safe & Secure

The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu, even with all its incredible offerings of comfort, features, and fuel economy, should perhaps be known for being one of the safest midsize sedans on the road.

Featuring Chevy’s unique Rear Seat Reminder, ten airbags, easily accessible LATCH anchors, front pedestrian alert, adaptive cruise control, automatic braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-change alerts, rear cross-traffic warning, and automatic parking assist, the new Malibu has some of the most advanced standard and optional safety systems on the market. Backing that claim is the IIHS, which awarded the 2016 Malibu a Top Safety Pick+ (that will likely carry over into this model year), as well as the NHTSA, who gave the 2017 Malibu an overall five-star rating.
