The New 2017 Chevrolet Equinox: An SUV Lover’s Dream

In preparation for next year’s full redesign, the 2017 Chevy Equinox is largely unchanged from its 2016 model, though some cosmetic updates, additions, and an all-new trim level put this SUV at the top of its class. What the 2018 model brings to America is still a mystery, but the 2016 Equinox is a marvel in its own right and comes with the same superior level of dependability, affordability, and versatility that Chevrolet is known to engineer.

What’s New on the 2017 Equinox?

This five-door compact crossover looks refreshed in its new appearance, aiming to dazzle and amaze, but what exactly has changed?

Most noticeable is the addition of a new Premier trim level. Replacing the older LTZ trim, the Equinox Premier model is the top-tier choice above the base L, mid-level LS, and sporty LT. The robust yet efficient 182-horsepower 2.4L I4 engine is standard throughout the Equinox lineup and is estimated to mirror last year’s EPA-estimated mileage at 26 mpg combined—which is not too shabby for a FWD SUV. The Equinox Premier and LT models also offer an optional 3.6L V-6 engine that propels the SUV at top speeds with its 301 horsepower and 272 lb-ft of torque and hits a respectable fuel-efficiency rating of 24 mpg highway.

The 2017 Chevrolet Equinox L and LS models come standard with 17” alloy wheels, FWD, rearview cameras, premium cloth seating, OnStar®, remote keyless entry, and the essential 60/40 split seatback. Max cargo capacity is 63.7 cubic feet for both models, and passenger volume comes in at a whopping 99.7 cubic feet. Options like universal tablet holders and engine block heaters are also available in these base and mid-level trims.

The LT trim steps into its athletic role with added standard features like heated side mirrors, roof racks, first-rate 17-inch aluminum wheels, tinted glass, SiriusXM® Radio, Daytime Running LED Lights, and the exclusive Chevrolet MyLink system. Power rear liftgates, heated front seats, leather seats, power sunroofs, remote engine starters, Rear Park Assist, and other features are available in the LT.

Earning gold is the Equinox Premium and its plethora of stock features, including driver and passenger heated seats, automatic climate-controlled AC, fog lights, heated chrome side mirrors, leather-appointed seats, 18” aluminum wheels, rearview self-dimming mirrors, 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seats, leather steering wheels, electric engine start, and cargo covers. Other options like HD audio systems and the Enhanced Convenience Package are also available when buying an Equinox Premier SUV.

The Addition of Three New Colors & More Packages

Having laid to rest the Champagne Silver Metallic and Tungsten Metallic colors, the 2017 Equinox has upgraded its wardrobe to absorb more onlookers’ glares. The new Summit White, Nightfall Gray Metallic, and Mosaic Black Metallic colors are certainly more striking to the eye, which we can attest to having seen them all hanging out in the McCarthy Chevrolet lot.

New feature packages are available with the Equinox LT model*, in addition to the carried-over Protection and Technology packages. They include the following:

  • Midnight Package
    • Mosaic Black Metallic paint
    • Perforated leather-appointed seats in Jet Black color
    • Driver’s seat and side mirror memory settings
    • 18” aluminum wheels
    • Black roof racks
    • Black front grille and rear fascia accents

  • Sport Package

    • Perforated leather-appointed seats in Jet Black color
    • Driver’s seat and side mirror memory settings
    • 18” aluminum wheels
    • Black roof racks

*All Chevy Equinox LT upgrades require the Convenience Package.

Ahead of the Game in Safety

Chevrolet has long been a leader in automotive safety, which is evident in the collection of safety features available with the Equinox. The aforementioned Chevrolet MyLink continues to be one of the most reliable infotainment systems in the industry with its GPS guidance and navigation, traffic and weather updates, and easy-to-navigate screen. Available Siri Eyes Free is integral for on-the-go drivers, allowing them make calls or send texts without taking their eyes off of the road. For increased rollover protection, a steel safety cage is always enveloping passengers, and six front and side airbags add a level of protection you could only expect in the 21st century.

A three-month subscription to OnStar® Emergency Services and Roadside Assistance is standard across the Equinox lineup, as are Rear Vision Cameras, StabiliTrak and traction control systems. Other optional safety features include Lane Departure Warning, Rear Park Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Blind Zone Alert, and Forward Collision Alert. While we’d love to have your business at our service center in Olathe or any of our auto body shops around Kansas City, we’d much rather you remain safe inside one of Chevy’s best SUVs.
