Veteran Squad Impresses

Once again veteran coach, Bill Self, has put together a talented squad who looks forward toward a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. One of this year’s top-ranked teams, the Jayhawks are once again dominating the Big 12 and look to earn their 12th straight Big 12 Conference championship with a powerful lineup led by senior forward, Perry Ellis. Despite a couple of injuries, Ellis still continues to be an offensive force, leading Kansas in scoring with a 16.5 ppg average. He also is the team’s top rebounder with a 6.3 rpg. He’s one of two players in the Big 12 to rank in the top seven players in both scoring and rebounding.

Ellis is complemented by junior guard Wayne Seldon, Jr. A member of the 2014-2015 Big 12 Championship All-Tournament team, Seldon gives the ‘Hawks a solid starter who can both run the point and score. He’s a potent outside threat with a third-best league 3-point percentage. He’s joined in the backcourt by junior guard Frank Mason III, who’s scoring 13.3 points per game in the two position when Seldon moves to the three. A defensive threat, Mason has a team-high 37 steals.

Junior forward Larden Lucas proven his worth as a starter, crashing the boards with an average of six rebounds per game. His 9.3 ppg and 9.8 rpg average gives the Jayhawks a dependable player who can both score and defend.

Talented Bench Delivers

One of the keys to the Jayhawks’ success this season is a deep bench. Six-foot, seven-inch junior guard Brannen Greene has come off the bench and been a consistent scorer. He’s particularly deadly from 3-point range and is scoring an average of 6.7 point per game. Sophomore guard Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk from the Ukraine has matured into an impact player off the bench this season. Last year, he was the youngest player in Big 12 history and brings lots of international basketball experience to the Jayhawks’ bench. He’s another 3-point shooter that can come into the game and spark a scoring run when he gets a hot hand.

Freshman forwards Carlton Bragg, Jr. and Cheick Diallo are joined on the bench by veterans Jamari Traylor and Hunter Mickelson; both of whom have started at various times during the season.

A Winning Tradition

Head Coach Bill Self is one of basketball’s winningest coaches with an outstanding 352-78 record in 12 seasons at KU. In his record 22nd season as a head coach, Self has an overall record of 559 wins and 183 losses. He’s won one national championship and guided KU to a record 11-straight regular-season Big 12 Conference championships. His teams have made Allen Fieldhouse one of the toughest places to play for with an amazing 190-9 all-time won-loss record at home. A five-time Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year, Self has guided the Jayhawks to 18-straight 23-win seasons with four straight 30-win seasons are the most consecutive 30-win seasons in NCAA history.
