Attention adrenaline junkies: The car gods have answered your prayers. Get ready to rumble as the bold, exhilarating, and all-new 2016 Chevy Camaro is prepared to scorch the pavement here in the greater Kansas City area. The iconic all-American muscle car made a spectacular entrance during a special launch event May 16 on Detroit’s scenic Belle Isle Grand Prix course. Hundreds of Camaro enthusiasts paraded their Camaros on the course. Festivities also included a museum of past Camaro models, and other events.
“Redesigning the Camaro is thrilling and challenging all at once,” stated Mark Reuss, GM’s executive vice president of product development. “For Camaro enthusiasts, it retains iconic design cues and offers even more performance. For a new generation of buyers, the 2016 Camaro incorporates our most innovative engineering ideas with finely honed performance and leading design.”
All new from the ground up
Everything about the “Gen-Six” Camaro is new from the ground up. In fact the only two items carried over from the previous model were Chevy’s signature “bowtie” badge and the “SS” emblem. While the new Camaro’s thoroughbred bloodlines are clearly evident, the 2016 Camaro features a fresh and updated appearance. “The Camaro went to the gym and came out with a lithe, more athletic physique for the sixth generation,” explained Ed Welburn, vice president of GM Global Design. Spending more than 350 hours in the wind tunnel, the new Camaro’s exterior visage is purposefully sculpted to offer a marked improvement in reduced aerodynamic lift. This results in improved performance, stability, cooling, and reduced wind noise.
A clean new look
The exterior sheet metal retains the Camaro’s broad and dramatic rear fenders, but with greater detailing. Smooth curved surfaces separated by sharp creases accentuate the Camaro’s long and low-slung aluminum hood. It’s almost as if the hood was “shrink wrapped” around the engine. The result is that the new 2016 Camaro looks lower and wider, despite the fact that it’s actually a bit smaller overall than the previous edition. Riding on GM’s Alpha Platform, which is the foundation for the Cadillac ATS and CTS, this new iteration of the Camaro is also stronger and lighter than ever, offering 28 percent more structural rigidity than the previous model. It also weighs 200 pounds less. This translates to a more nimble and responsive driving experience.
New contemporary interior
The Camaro’s interior also received a major makeover. Premium materials are utilized throughout, and exterior visibility has been improved. It includes an ambient lighting system with 24 different colors with controllable fade and transition effects. A new eight-inch, high-definition, color touchscreen display now resides at the top of the center stack. It controls Chevy’s Mylink “infotainment suite” of apps, navigation, and audio features. Heating and cooling controls are actually incorporated into the large, round, machine-tooled air vents, while a flat-bottomed, leather-wrapped steering wheel contains an array of fingertip controls.
A unique circular programmable “Command Center” nestled between twin analog gauges provides a variety of driver-focused information, including navigation, performance, and a lap timer. Additionally, an available textured wireless phone charging mat is incorporated behind the center console. Driver-selectable Sport, Tour, and Ice/Snow drive modes allow you to tweak traction control, ride stiffness, shift feel, throttle, exhaust, and steering for a truly customized ride. The SS Model also features a special “Track” setting for an even sportier driving experience. And GM’s magnetic ride control is now offered on the Camaro for the first time.
Several powerplant configurations
It’s under the hood where the new 2016 Camaro really shines. There are six total powertrain configurations, starting with the standard 2.0 liter, four-cylinder Turbo which is rated at 275 hp with 295 lb-ft of torque. It delivers 0-60 mph in less than six seconds. The Gen-Six Camaro also gets a new 3.6 liter V-6 that produces 335 hp with 284 lb-ft of torque. A combination of direct injection, variable valve timing, and Active Fuel Management (which deactivates two cylinders under light throttle situations) help make the new Camaro the most fuel-efficient ever. For the ultimate in power and performance, the 6.2 liter, LT1 V8 borrowed from the Corvette Stingray achieves a prodigious 455 hp and massive 455 lb-ft of torque, making it the most potent Camaro SS ever built. The engines are mated to either a six-speed manual transmission or an all-new Hydra-Matic eight-speed automatic with paddle shifters.
It’s no wonder that all 2016 Camaros come with standard Brembo brakes. Another unique feature is a dual-mode exhaust available on the V6 and the V8 which allows you to personalize the exhaust sound, from “stealth” to “track” modes.
