GM Safety Tech Every Parent Should Have

The official start of the school year has commenced, and parents everywhere are scrambling to adjust to the craziness back-to-school season brings. The new schedules. The long drop-off lines. The this and the that. Yeah—this time of year can be chaotic.

But GM is in your corner, parents. To ensure you’re keeping everyone safe, including the kids in your back seat, GM has designed many of its Chevy, Buick, and GMC vehicles to feature some of the most advanced safety systems in the country.

Surround Vision Camera

Over 15,000 children per year are injured by backover accidents. Of those accidents, 24% occurred in driveways. The statistics are alarming, which is why GM has developed its Surround Vision camera.

Surround Vision provides drivers with a full 360-degree bird’s-eye view of their surroundings. Four independent cameras—one on each bumper and side mirror—meld together to complete a composite view of your vehicle, up to the centimeter of its beautiful exterior. That image is displayed on the HD screen at the top of the center stack, making it the virtual pair of eyes in the back of every parent’s head.

Surround Vision technology is available all across the GM lineup, including the 2019 Chevy Equinox, Traverse, and Buick Envision.

Rear Seat Reminder

Nearly 40 children die to heatstroke each year after being locked inside vehicles. GM has made a commitment to reduce those heat-related deaths by offering its patented Rear Seat Reminder system in certain Chevy, Buick, and GMC models.

Rear Seat Reminder senses when you’ve opened the rear door before a trip, then issues five audible chimes before you exit the vehicle, alerting you to check the back for stragglers. Just five dings could save your child’s life.

Teen Driver Technology

If you’ve witnessed your kid grow into a young 16-year-old adult, you’re likely terrified every time they get behind the wheel. Teen Driver gives you just a smidge more peace of mind.

Available in the GMC Yukon, Chevrolet Cruze, and many other GM models, Teen Driver is your teen’s guardian angel—at least on the road. With this tech, you can set restrictions and monitor how your new driver is doing. Mute the audio when seatbelts aren’t fastened. Keep all safety features active. Create custom speed alerts or even limit the speed at which they can drive. And when they get back from their first day of school, you can track their progress with an in-vehicle report card.

Whew!

Additional GM Safety Features

Of course, there are a number of additional active and passive safety features that can be found in new GMC, Buick, and Chevy vehicles.

  • Low Speed Automatic Braking automatically applies the brakes when sensors detect an imminent collision.
  • Lane Keep Assist steers your vehicle back into its lane if you don’t respond to warnings.
  • Forward Collision Alert will vibrate your Safety Alert Seat when it detects a potential collision with the vehicle in front of you.
  • Adaptive Cruise Control allows you to set both a speed and distance from the vehicle in front of you.
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert utilizes radar sensors to monitor cross traffic as you reverse, sending audible warnings or seat pulses if vehicles are approaching.
  • Rear Park Assist senses objects as you reverse or park.
  • Side Blind Zone Alert flashes an icon on your side-view mirrors when another vehicle is in your blind spot.
