It’s August, and if you’re anywhere near the Marshall or Sedalia, Missouri area, you probably already know it’s time for the Missouri State Fair. With the opening festivities fast approaching, now’s the time to start planning your visit. Here are the best activities, events, and things to do at the Missouri State Fair this year.
Thursday, Aug. 9
The Opening Day Parade kicks off at 6 pm, but the MRCA Show-Me State Stampede and Rodeo is the day’s big event. Starting at 7 pm, the buckin’ and lassoin’ begins, so grab your tickets online for $8.
The opening day of the Missouri State Fair is also “Come Home for Family Value Day,” which means discounted general admission ($4 tickets for adults). Bingo!
Friday, Aug. 10
Bring the XL bib for Friday’s finger-licking Throwdown Barbecue Contest. Every type of BBQ will be gobbled down and judged, from brats to burgers to wings. If you plan on showing off your skills around hot coals, check in at Lot D by 7:30 am.
Saturday, Aug. 11
Head to the Pepsi Grandstand at 7:30 pm to catch Hank Williams Jr. and opening act Frank Foster. Following the country tunes is a gorgeous fireworks show. Tickets for this Sedalia concert can be purchased online.
Sunday, Aug. 12
The Missouri Association Championship Truck and Tractor Pull finalists will be showing off their horsepower and torque at Sunday’s Shoot Out. As fans of trucks, torque, and horsepower, we can’t wait to see these beasts in action – and we’re sure we’re not alone. Pick up your tickets for $20 and prepare to fight the crowds between noon and 6 pm.
Monday, Aug. 13
Free tram rides are available on August 13, which is also race day for the Fair Cross Series Motocross finalists. Beginning at 7 pm, riders will go for gold on the Flat Track TT course. Tickets cost $7, and kids under the age of 5 years are free.
Tuesday, Aug. 14
Canned food donations are accepted all day to benefit thousands of children through the Drive to Feed Kids Campaign. Last year, this charitable service provided over 52,000 nutritious meals to hungry kids in Missouri, all while raising nearly $150,000 for the nonprofit Feeding Missouri. For more info about how you can participate, visit mofarmerscare.com.
Wednesday, Aug. 15
What do Travis Tritt, The Charlie Daniels Band, The Marshall Tucker Band, and The Outlaws have in common? Ask them when they take the Pepsi Grandstand stage at 6 pm on August 15. Tickets to the Southern Uprising Rock Festival start at $30.
Thursday, Aug. 16
Bring the kids on August 16 and participate in this year’s Throwback Thursday Scavenger Hunt. Winners of this Sherlock Holmes-type game will win special carnival tickets to next year’s Sedalia fair.
Friday, Aug. 17
A Midwestern state fair isn’t complete without a Bull Riding Competition. Fork over $12 and watch riders hang on for dear life at the State Fair Arena. Can anyone get through 8 seconds before eating a dirt pie?
Saturday, Aug. 18
Chicago’s Hillbilly Rockstarz will be covering the top country songs at 6 pm on the Budweiser Stage. Best of all, this concert is free with admission.
Sunday, Aug. 19
The final day of the Missouri State Fair is full of activities for kids and families. Here are just a handful of events we recommend watching.
- First up is the Pedal Pull at 10 am. Kids between the ages of 4 and 12 years will compete to see whose little legs can pedal a mini-tractor best.
- At 1:30, the Missouri Fiddling Championship will announce its nimble-fingered winners. (Neither Charlie Daniels nor the Devil will be competing, so the field is wide open.)
- The auto body specialists at our Sedalia collision center are salivating over this year’s Demolition Derby. Just $12 gets you into this showdown at 2 pm.
- The fair’s closing ceremony is none other than the ASCS National Sprint Car and Ulma Late Model Races at 6 pm. If you’re like us, you won’t want to miss this fantastic competition.
