In the battle for supremacy in the hotly contested compact crossover SUV segment, Mazda has fired an impressive salvo of advanced features and innovative design that make its all-new 2016 CX-3 crossover SUV a formidable opponent.
In itsrecent review of Mazda’s newest entry into this increasingly popular category filled with lots of bland, “me too” vehicles, Car and Driver Magazine raves that the new CX-3 “…already owns all other tiny crossovers” with its bold styling that evolves from Mazda’s unique design philosophy called “Jinba Ittai.” Loosely translated from Japanese, the phrase means “man, horse, one body” and is meant to evoke the fluid merging of horse and rider into one.
“No single element overpowers the other. They’re all balanced, harmonious, and easily exploited by the pilot. And the idea that Mazda even considered the notion when whipping together the CX-3 is reason enough for enthusiasts to stop and take notice,” says the magazine.
Looking good from any angle
The magazine goes on to praise the CX-3’s aggressive and muscular countenance, stating: “…the small SUV features a tight greenhouse perched atop flowing fender flares. In top-spec trims, the CX-3 wears large 18-inch wheels that fill out the fender openings nicely and impart the crossover with a powerful stance. The front and rear ends look essentially scaled down from the CX-5’s, which is a good thing given that there’s nothing wrong with the way Mazda’s larger crossover looks.”
In addition to its stunning exterior good looks, the new Mazda CX-3 also gets high marks for its well thought-out and technologically advanced interior.
Hit the road in style
“Like every recent Mazda product,” the magazine’s review notes, “there is style and substance to spare, with a high-resolution seven-inch touch-screen center display, a McLaren-aping three-pod gauge cluster, and one of the nicest infotainment control knobs this side of a BMW 7-series.”
But it’s on the road that this newest member of Mazda’s award-winning automotive lineup really gets out in front of the pack. According to Forbes Magazine, this is where the new CX-3 really shines. The magazine notes that the CX-3 benefits from the 2.0 liter, four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission that it borrows from the popular Mazda3.
Engineered to outperform
“The CX-3’s engine, transmission and lightweight body structure — most of which is comprised of either high-strength or ultra-high-strength steel — are part of Mazda’s suite of Skyactiv fuel-saving technology,” says Forbes. “All the components are designed for optimum efficiency without compromising the fun-to-drive nature inherent in all Mazdas. For example, in the Mazda3, the six-speed automatic is more fuel-efficient than the six-speed manual, yet it also offers quick gear changes for peppy acceleration and downshifts.”
In addition to inheriting the Mazda3’s spirited and fuel-efficient engine that pumps out a respectable 155 hp, the new 2016 Mazda CX-3 also benefits from Mazda’s corporate “Zoom Zoom” philosophy that injects lots of driving fun into every bend of the road. As Forbes Magazine notes:
“Though attractive design is a big selling point for Mazda vehicles, it is the sporty driving dynamics — which the 2016 CX-3 should inherit — that most set them apart from competitors. The difference in steering feel, suspension tuning and throttle response that is Mazda’s signature ought to draw some buyers from the blander choices.”
And, according to Mazda: “To enhance the customer’s driving pleasure, the new 2016 CX-3 also offers a wide range of Mazda’s latest technologies, including the Mazda Connect car connectivity system and i-ACTIVSENSE advanced safety features.”
Car and Driver concludes: “Mazda has successfully infused its most recent spate of products with plenty of dynamic ability and driving enjoyment, which has us eagerly anticipating our first turn behind the wheel of the CX-3.”
