There are a lot of “me-too” cookie-cutter cars in the highly competitive sub-compact crossover segment that elicit more of a yawn then a “yahoo!”
Not so with the all-new 2016 Mazda CX-3, which is drawing rave reviews for its unconventional and upscale looks, superior build quality, and its remarkably sophisticated – and spirited – handling and performance.
When Two Are One
The Japanese call it “jinba ittai,” a phrase that means “when horse and rider are one.” But in this case, the “horse” in question comes with Mazda’s exclusive SKYACTIV® Technology. It’s an engineering philosophy that fuses driver and car together so that they operate seamlessly and effortlessly. It’s a harmonious balance of handling, power, braking, and steering. And it’s just one of the many things which set the new 2016 Mazda CX-3 crossover SUV apart from the rest. It’s The Mazda Way.
For starters, the all-new CX-3 is smart and handsome from any angle. When it debuted at the 2014 L.A. Auto Show, pundits praised its edgy, contemporary styling, which shares Mazda’s “Kodo” design cues from the Mazda3, the Mazda6 and the Mazda CX-5. Prominent fender flares frame large 18-inch wheels, which complement the CX-3’s rakish greenhouse. Oversized vertical turn signals/fog lamps sit on either side of a large black air inlet. Narrow round headlights framed by a circle of LED running lights set off the CX-3’s wide front grille, featuring the marque’s signature horizontal chrome bands inset with the Mazda logo. The vehicle’s rear borrows heavily from its bigger CX-5 sibling for inspiration.
All the Bells and Whistles. Plus a Whole Lot More.
The CX-3’s sporty interior is spacious, stylish, driver-focused, and packed with the latest technological gadgetry. This includes a high-definition 7-inch touchscreen display that sits at eye-level above the center stack. Functions are controlled by a large knob just below and to the right of the gearshift. A three-spoke sport steering wheel features fingertip controls for audio, phone, and cruise control. The instrument cluster features three easy-to-read gauges.
Sprited Performance. Superior Safety.
Speaking of ponies, the new Mazda CX-3 has plenty. Based on the same 2.0 liter SKYACTIV® four-cylinder that powers the current Mazda3, it’s estimated that the CX-3’s fuel-efficient power plant will pump out around 155 hp, generating roughly 150 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to a smooth-shifting six speed automatic. Buyers can choose from the standard front-wheel-drive layout, or optional all-wheel-drive configuration.
The new Mazda CX-3 also comes equipped with Mazda’s “i-Activsense” safety technology, which includes such features as blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, radar-based collision warning with automatic braking, and adaptive cruise control.
Expect the sporty, stylish, and utterly refreshing new 2016 Mazda CX-3 to hit showroom floors across the U.S. sometime in the middle of this year.
