Every time our Lynchburg car dealership receives a new Kia model, it’s like welcoming a newborn baby into the family. We squeeze its cheeks. We play rousing games of peekaboo. We nurture it as if it were, well, an infant. But when those new baby Kias are ready to leave us with an emptier nest—they grow up so fast—we put on a brave face and let them out on the open road. And there’s perhaps no car better prepared to be on its own than the all-new 2018 Kia Optima. Help us send this well-raised sedan out into the world, will you?
Here’s what the critics, experts, and reviewers think about the new Kia Optima, which is available for sale and lease right now at our Kia of Lynchburg, VA dealership.
What’s New for 2018?
Having ditched a few trim levels and packages for 2018, the new Kia Optima is now available in five trims: a base LX, S, LX 1.6T, EX, and SX, with the S trim being a new addition. An upgraded 7-inch touchscreen, rear parking sensors, blind-spot warnings, cross-traffic alerts, and compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are newly standard on all Optimas.
Hey, Good Lookin’
On the exterior, the 2018 Kia Optima is a shining example of what a midsize sedan should be. It’s got an attractive body that features subtle flourishes of panache, such as a coupe-like roof and thin front grille shaped like a bow tie. The range-topping Optima SX goes an extra mile to look sharp; it comes with 18-inch wheels, chrome dual exhaust, adaptive headlamps, and a shiny black trim.
The refined edges and low stance lead way to an equally refined cabin. Soft-touch materials abound, making the Optima feel as upscale as some luxury midsize cars. The dashboard droops into the corners to offer drivers improved visibility. Connect your mobile phone to the Optima’s high-end infotainment system, and you’ll be able to stream music through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Make the upgrade to a premium 10-speaker surround sound system, and those sweet jams will be even sweeter. Front seats are roomy and supportive, especially when heated and ventilated (optional), and there’s plenty of legroom for rear passengers.
No matter the trim, the 2018 Optima clearly looks the part of a sophisticated gentleman—good job, Kia engineers.
Optima = Optimal Performance
A standard 2.4L DOHC I-4 can be found under the hood of the LX, S, and EX Optima trims. It makes 185 horsepower and returns 36 or 24 mpg on the highway, depending on trim. At the top end of the Optima lineup is the SX, which is fitted with a 2.0L turbo-four GDI engine that churns out an extraordinary 245 horsepower and returns 31 mpg at highway speeds. The mid-range LX 1.6T model is equipped with a 1.6L turbo-four that produces 178 hp; it’s matched with a unique 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, which allows the Optima to return up to 37 highway mpg.
All Optima models also come with toggleable drive-select modes. When you need a bit more throttle to pass Granny on US-460, tap the “Sport” mode. For long drives, “Eco” is your go-to. Daily commutes need nothing more than the standard “Normal” mode, but feel free to change it up and live a little on occasion.
