Fresh off last year’s redesign, the 2017 Kia Sorento embarks on its newest journey to the peak of Mount SUV. And at Kia of Lynchburg, we’re ready to be its guide. Let’s take a look at why we believe this year’s Sorento is the crossover that will make drivers curl their lips into a smile.
2017 Kia Sorento SUV
Kia Sorento SUVs are available in five trims (and their derivatives): the base L, LX, EX, SX, and Limited models.
In the baseline L trim, the Sorento packs a load of features while still remaining a bargain crossover. Keyless entry, cruise control, stain-resistant seats, Bluetooth connectivity, USB inputs, and a cleverly designed central stack and dash make up it and its upper-level compatriots’ list of features. A 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine pops out 185 horsepower for an impressive EPA-rated 28 mpg highway in FWD*. Across the entire Sorento lineup, standard equipment includes hill start assist, electronic stability control, ABS, and torque vectoring cornering controls.
Stepping up into the LX, you’ll find the same 2.4L engine and FWD as the L trim, with the option of upgrading to the 3.3L V6 engine and AWD. Other additions include a rearview camera, touchscreen audio controls, noise-canceling windshield, and rear air conditioning.
The Sorento EX is the vehicle of choice here at Kia of Lynchburg. It comes equipped with a turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder engine that produces 240 horsepower efficiently, and the EX 2.0 Turbo model is fitted with paddle shifters. With the three-row EX, the SUV comes standard with the 290-horsepower 3.3L V6. Back-up alerts and active-safety systems are also standard features, while blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic warnings are optional in both the two- and three-row EX model. Value is evident with the mid-level EX trim, thanks to Kia’s UVO infotainment system, CarPlay, Android Auto, leather seating, push-button starts, dual climate control, power driver’s seats, second-row window shading, and heated front seats. With the EX, you’ll certainly get the most bang for your buck.
Near the top of the Sorento lineup is the SX model, which has standard blind-spot monitoring and cross-traffic alerts, an Infinity 10-speaker sound system, navigation with traffic alerts, and UVO eServices (with handy parental controls and app integration for Yelp, Pandora, Siri Eyes Free, and Google Local Search, among others). Power folding controls are also nifty and provide easy access to the rear liftgate without leaving the driver’s seat, which itself offers extra comfort thanks to extended thigh bolsters—any volleyball player’s dream.
The Limited Sorento gives luxury SUVs a run for their money. It comes with Nappa leather seating and premium leather steering wheel, 19-inch chrome wheels, a power passenger seat with adjustable controls for height and tilt, and an optional packaged suite of safety features including lane departure and front crash warnings, and surround-view cameras.
What the Critics Say About The 2017 Kia Sorento
Kelly Blue Book, in its 2017 Kia Sorento review, celebrated the crossover for its amenity-loaded appeal and snappy good looks. Specifically identified by KBB.com as a jack of all trades in the segment, the new Sorento offers versatility in its third-row seating and storage, a great value thanks to one of the best warranties in the automotive world, and an enhanced suite of features.
“If you want a crossover SUV that’s not too big, not too small and packs a lot for the money, the 2017 Sorento feels like Goldilocks. Kia’s standard 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, meanwhile, could still be going strong when the kids are old enough to drive.”
The Car Connection also heaped heavy amounts of praise on Kia’s newest SUV, giving it 9.0 (out of 10) ratings in the safety and features section. They particularly found the interior materials to be more refined than many of its competitors, offering a soft-touch feel all around, and applauded Kia’s ability to add value across their lineup thanks to a plethora of modern features that helped it garner some of the highest safety ratings in the segment.
“Parents should be at ease knowing that the Sorento gets high ratings for safety and has a robust set of active-safety tools.”
The 2017 Sorento joined the ranks of the elite at Edmunds.com, who gave it a near-perfect score. Their reviewers felt that the driver-side and rear controls are simple to understand and operate, the cabin is as attractive as some high-end luxury crossovers, and enhanced smartphone integration is especially revolutionary for Kia.
“There is a marked sense of sophistication in the 2017 Kia Sorento’s ride. Kia’s midsize crossover is also impressively quiet, especially in the EX trim and above, so count the Sorento as a good candidate for a comfortable family road trip.”
