Debuting at the prestigious New York Auto Show earlier this year, the U.S. version of the all-new 2016 Hyundai Tucson Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV) delivers an exciting blend of head-turning style, smart technology, upscale refinement, and fuel-efficient performance.
Recently, Consumer Reports had the opportunity to test drive a base model and fully equipped Limited version. They had many good things to say about Hyundai’s redesigned and refreshed entry in the growing compact SUV market.
New Interior Impresses
The consumer watchdog publication praised the new 2016 Tucson’s interior: “For one,” they said, “Hyundai has learned a thing or two about space management. Despite being only two and a half inches longer and less than an inch wider than the outgoing Tucson, the cabin space has grown. Passengers over six-foot-two can sit behind a like-sized driver without fear of knee pain, and head room is plentiful.”
“Our press version came with the Ultimate package,” they added, “which included a massive sunroof, hands-free power tailgate, heated and ventilated front seats, and an eight-inch touch screen. Some automakers have infotainment systems that make it a struggle just to change the radio station, but Hyundai’s digital layout is mercifully logical. We’re hard pressed to think of any other car in this segment that offers as much as the loaded up Tucson…”
Motor Trend Magazine also had good things to say about the 2016 Tucson’s reimagined interior: “The interior makeover gives the 2016 Tucson a more premium feel, with stitched material on the dashboard and an available 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Bluetooth® connectivity and a rearview camera are standard, while advanced safety technology includes Lane Change Assist, a blind spot monitor, and automatic emergency braking.”
Other key interior highlights include an optional 405-watt premium audio system, leather seating surfaces, dual climate control, power seats, and more. Many of the “infotainment” functions can also be accessed by steering wheel-mounted controls. And there’s even a driver information display in the instrument cluster which communicates vital information. On select models you can even control some functions with an Android smartwatch. You can also enjoy the added convenience of available voice-activated commands, plus the safety of hands-free dialing with available Siri “Eyes Free” capabilities.
Fresh, Contemporary Styling
The redesigned exterior features a fresh, modern, and sophisticated Euro look with available 19-inch alloy wheels adding a bold and assertive curb appeal. The new Tucson’s exterior flows harmoniously from its sloping hood through to the gently rounded rear end, echoing the company’s “fluidic sculpture” design philosophy. Motor Trend notes: “Overall styling mimics the larger Santa Fe, especially up front where the larger grille features big slats and a Hyundai badge. The headlights are much wider, while the side profile showcases sculpted fenders and thick contrast plastic cladding. Full LED headlights are available on the top-spec Limited model.”
Fuel-Efficient Performance And Advanced Safety Features
Under the hood, the all-new Hyundai Tucson offers two power plant options. The standard powertrain features a peppy 164-hp 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine generating 151 lb.-ft. of torque. It’s mated to a smooth-shifting, six-speed SHIFTRONIC® automatic transmission with Driver Mode Select, which customizes steering effort, throttle mapping, and transmission shift points.
Step up to the more spirited and powerful 1.6 liter turbocharged gasoline direct injection (T-GDI) four-cylinder that delivers a responsive 175-hp and 195 lb.-ft. of torque. It’s paired with a new seven-speed, dual-clutch SHIFTRONIC automatic. Both engines offer solid fuel economy, with the Eco front-wheel drive model achieving an EPA-estimated 26/33 mpg city/highway. In terms of handling, the 2016 Tucson can be ordered with Hyundai’s advanced all-wheel drive (AWD) system with Active Cornering Control. The AWD can also be locked for off-road and slippery road conditions.
Consumer Reports sums up their impression of the new 2016 Hyundai Tucson by saying: “The substantial feel and mature styling give the 2016 Tucson strengths that could shake up the small SUV market. It has grown up in many ways, and while we’re far from knowing how it will rank among the pack of small SUVs, the 2016 Tucson has made a strong impression.”
