Take a Trip to the Hoosier State

Grab your family and take the 200-mile trek to Indianapolis for your summer road trip. While there, visit the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, which is known as “the best children’s museum in the U.S.” With nearly 500,000 square feet of hands-on exhibits, play areas, and food courts, it’s easy to see why this children’s wonderland is so beloved by Indy residents and visitors alike. You can easily spend an entire afternoon at the newly reopened ScienceWorks exhibit, but we recommend venturing through all five-plus floors of this entertainment palace.

If your kids are more interested in fluff and hooves, you can head to Conner Prairie in Fishers, IN. Just east of Indianapolis, Conner Prairie is every outdoorsy explorer’s dream. There are nature trails through old-timey towns, farm animals, botanical beauties, and much more to engage all of your five senses. And don’t miss out on the hot air balloon voyage, which is positioned right in the center of the food courts to offer you the best views of the entire town.

Kentucky Bound

Another 200-mile journey is on your agenda when you head out of Columbus and into Louisville’s Mega Cavern, where everything is “Mega.” Rated as the #1 attraction in Louisville—perhaps even all of Kentucky—this kid-friendly cavern is packed with zip lines, rock walls, dirt bike jumps, touring trams, and even a rickety wooden bridge! It’s Kentucky’s version of an indoor amusement park, and it’ll keep you occupied for days if you let it.

Don’t let your kids take over the road trip! Flip the script by heading south of Louisville and into Bowling Green, KY, where the National Corvette Museum awaits you. The museum showcases over 80 Corvettes, including prototypes and classics, and displays are constantly being rotated to give visitors some variety in their diet. Toyota may have Chevy’s number in 2017, but there are few American sports cars that carry as much prestige as the Corvette.

Things Get Spooky in West Virginia

If you ain’t afraid of no ghosts, find your way 200 miles southeast to Weston, WV, and take a tour of the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. Known for its creepy atmosphere and 19th-century Gothic architecture, the asylum—formerly the Weston State Hospital—offers walk-in tours through November, so don’t wait until summer is over to visit! It’s a rip-roaring good time if you enjoy getting the pants scared off of your shaking legs.

Not everyone is a wannabe Ghostbuster—we get it. If you’d rather have a more traditional road trip, pack your bags and attach a travel trailer to your Toyota Tacoma or Tundra, because Harper’s Ferry, WV, is calling your name. The National Historical Park offers guided tours and the most picturesque views of the Potomac River, so there’s no excuse for sleeping in on your vacation. Bring the family for a weekend getaway of camping, sight-seeing, and relaxation.

The Keystone State is Your “Key” to a Great Vacation

Make the journey east to the Gettysburg National Military Park, which is equal parts entertainment and education. You can tour The Battlefield and Gettysburg Museum, snap photos of the Eisenhower National Historic Site, or enjoy whichever highlighted event is occurring that day (there are many). Take to the site’s calendar to help with planning your road trip.

There’s no shortage of wonderful destinations in Pennsylvania, but none are finer than the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Wear your walking shoes and charge your camera, because you’ll find miles of artwork displayed along the walls and floors of the largest art museum in the country. Whether you’re a fan of eccentric abstractionist paintings or ancient Chinese sculptures, you’ll find it in Philadelphia.
