5 Reasons Why the 2017 Honda CR-V Beats the RAV4

Surprise! The all-new Honda CR-V and refreshed Toyota RAV4 are at it once again, throwing jabs and dishing out the pain left and right on their quest for the coveted crossover crown. But the 2017 CR-V has a few trick up its sleeve this time around. Let’s review all five rounds of this CR-V vs. RAV4 bout to find out just how excellent Honda’s newest SUV really is (hint: it’s very excellent).

Thoughtful Cabin

This CR-V vs. RAV4 comparison wouldn’t be complete without assessing their interiors—after all, that’s probably why you’re looking for a new SUV at our Naples Honda dealership.

As a shopper, you simply won’t find a roomier or more comfortable small SUV than the CR-V. Honda’s new SUV offers 102.9 cubic feet of passenger space, which is more than the 100.7 available in the Toyota RAV4. A difference of two cubic feet may seem negligible, but that space is spread throughout the cabin to make it more comfortable. Don’t believe us? Just take a look at the CR-V’s dimensions when compared to the RAV4:

Front hip room – 55.1″ vs. 54.3″
Front shoulder room – 57.9″ vs. 57.3″
Rear hip room – 49.5″ vs. 48.9″
Rear leg room – 40.4″ vs. 37.2″

The CR-V is also packed with handy storage solutions, such as a configurable front console that includes a sliding shelf, cup holders, deep cubby hole, and a non-slip tray for your phone. Toyota’s RAV4 has a limited amount of extra storage for small items, and many of its drivers will find the cupholders to be a nuisance rather than a convenience.

2017 Honda CR-V Features

More Standard Features

When comparing the top AWD trims (Honda CR-V Touring vs. Toyota RAV4 SE), it’s hard not to notice whose list of standard features is more extensive. The CR-V Touring comes equipped with a universal garage door opener, remote trunk release, memory seats, illuminated vanity mirrors, navigation with real-time traffic and voice activation, and more. The RAV4 SE, on the other hand, doesn’t offer these convenient features as standard, if at all.

2017 Honda CR-V Cargo space

Cargo Space

In addition to its roomier cabin, the 2017 Honda CR-V also has a cargo area that clearly beats out that of the RAV4. Offering 39.2 cubic feet of space with the seats up, the CR-V is better than the RAV4 and its 38.4 cubic-foot cargo area. With the CR-V’s new drop-down rear seats, you can open up the cargo area to its maximum (75.8 cubic feet). The best the RAV4 can do is 73.8 cu. ft.

Engine & Performance

For 2017, the CR-V offers two engine choices: a standard 2.4L 4-cylinder that makes 184 horsepower and the upgraded 1.5L turbo-4 that turns out 190hp. With either engine pumping away under the hood, the CR-V is a standout performer. Acceleration is excellent, shifting is seamless, and the reworked suspension offers sleeping-baby calmness to the cabin.

Both CR-V engines offer more power than the RAV4’s sole option, a 2.5L 4-cylinder DOHC that produces just 176 horsepower. We question Toyota’s decision to remove last iteration’s V6 from this year’s RAV4, especially considering its only engine lacks the same level of oomph as the CR-V. Plus, it’s a noisy little bugger when it reaches highway speeds.

Fuel Economy

We live in an era where steel-encased gas guzzlers have gone the way of the buffalo. That is to say that today’s SUVs are a little friendlier on the environment and your wallet. Take the 2017 CR-V as an example; with an estimated 27 city/33 highway mpg it’s not only more efficient than the RAV4 (23 city/29 highway mpg), it’s also one of the most fuel-efficient crossovers in its class.

Fall in Love with the 2017 CR-V in Naples

The crossover segment gets more competitive each year, and with that competition, there’s always one or two remarkable models that emerge from the pack. For 2017, it’s clear that the CR-V is undoubtedly this year’s cream of the crop—and it’s available for sale and lease right now at our car dealership in Naples, FL.
