Like Michael Jordan in 1993, the Honda Accord Hybrid unlaced its shoes after its 2015 model year and exited the arena, disappointing many of us at Germain Honda of Naples. Now, just a year removed from the hybrid game, the Accord Hybrid is ready to make its glorious return to the court. Boasting a more compact battery, upgraded styling, and improved fuel efficiency, the 2017 Honda Accord Hybrid certainly looks capable of mirroring His Airness’s post-retirement (and un-retirement) success by setting a new benchmark for eco-friendly vehicles in its segment.
Slotted to be one of the first 2017 Honda models to hit the market here in the Fort Myers area, the four-door hybrid will be available for purchase from Germain Honda of Naples later this season. Myers.
The Accord Hybrid Proves that Two Heads are Better than One
Most noticeable on this new Accord Hybrid is the integration of a lighter, more compact lithium-ion battery pack and an updated two-motor hybrid system.
Let’s begin with the battery. Slightly less bulky than previous models—Honda’s claims that the packs are 33% smaller and 13% lighter appear legit—the new battery frees up a considerable amount of space. The sedan’s engineers took full advantage of this newly found roominess by bumping trunk capacity up to a best-in-segment 13.5 cubic feet. The additional space also leads us to the car’s impressive two-motor system, effectively called the “Sport Hybrid i-MMD.”
The ultra-efficient Hybrid i-MMD two-motor system helps to deliver an unrivaled fuel economy rating of 48 mpg combined, besting even green-car powerhouses like the Prius. What’s most remarkable about this upgrade is its power output. Paired with a 2.0L, i-VTEC, Atkinson engine, the Accord Hybrid’s motors can pump out a superb 212 horsepower—an increase of 16 hp over the last model year’s numbers. And at 23% smaller, this two-motor system is an achievement in and of itself.
This power output is delivered through three Drive modes: EV, Hybrid, and Engine.
- EV Drive, the car’s all-electric mode, is ideal for short commutes. Much like all-electric or plug-in vehicles, the range on the Accord Hybrid in EV is short; transferring power through the front wheels and using the battery pack as a sole source of propulsion can do that to a car.
- Hybrid Drive is what we call a “perfect blend.” As one motor powers the front wheels, the second motor is powered by the engine to both effectively supplement the energy used and charge up the battery.
- In Engine Drive, the Honda Accord Hybrid links engine and propulsion motors to each other, producing more powerful torque, higher loads, and quicker speeds through the front wheels.
Best yet is Accord Hybrid’s ability to seamlessly and continuously shift between these modes based on which is the most efficient for current road conditions.
Short Retirement = Complete Rejuvenation?
Three trim levels of the Accord Hybrid are offered (base, EX-L, and Touring), and all of them improve upon the look of models past.
LED headlights and tail lights are tinted blue, and come exclusive to the Hybrid. An aluminum hood and wheels give the sedan a slimmer appearance, while a more aggressive front grille and fascia are sexy enough to draw the eyes of any passers-by. Otherwise, the car is nearly identical to its non-hybrid Accord—which is nothing to balk at.
The inside of the 2017 Accord Hybrid is what really shines. Depending on trim, the sedan is fitted with a seven-inch touchscreen and infotainment center that offers Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality—a must-have in this day and age. An all-digital cluster of instrumentation is prominent thanks to a pleasing array of light-up displays. Front and rear sensors were added to the display screens to aid with parking. Even heated rear seats are available to keep even the chilliest of fannies toasty.
The implementation of the Honda Sensing bundle in all trim levels of the 2017 Accord Hybrid is a first for Honda. This suite of safety and driver-assistance tech includes a rear-view camera and wide-angle display, collision warning system, automatic braking, lane-departure and lane-keeping systems, adaptive cruise control, and road-departure mitigation. We’ve no doubt the Accord Hybrid will earn high safety ratings. This may be the first instance of including these as standard features in base models, but hopefully it won’t be the last.
