The ballots were cast at this year’s 2016 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, with the brand-new and stunningly reimagined 2016 Honda Civic taking top honors as the newly named “2016 North American Car of the Year.”
The Undisputed Winner
All eyes were on Detroit as more than 5,000 journalists from 60 countries gathered for what is one of the most prestigious and influential automotive exhibitions in the world. A select group of 50 automotive journalists was involved in voting for the much popular North American Car of the Year Award.
According to the NAIAS, “The awards are designed to recognize the most outstanding new vehicles of the year. These vehicles are benchmarks in their segments based on factors including innovation, comfort, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar.” Finalists for one of the most prestigious awards in the automotive industry included the Chevy Malibu and Mazda MX-5 Miata. The new Civic won hands-down with a score of 203 points, followed by the Malibu with 181 points, and the Miata with 146 points.
New Turbocharged Engine
What were some of the reasons why the all-new 2016 Honda Civic took away the top honors at this year’s Detroit show? First off is the Civic’s new direct-injection 1.5-liter turbocharged i-VTEC® 4-cylinder engine that delivers a spirited 174 horsepower and 192 lb.-ft. of torque. Significantly, this is the first turbocharged engine to be offered by Honda in the U.S. market.
Exceptional Fuel Economy
The turbo four is designed for high cruise efficiency and robust performance. The Civic’s advanced Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with EcoAssist™ helps the Civic achieve an outstanding EPA-estimated 42 mpg on the highway and 31 mpg in the city. The new Civic puts some spirited fun in your daily drive with a sports-tuned chassis and suspension that delivers nimble handling and a smoother ride. This is one Civic you won’t mind taking out for a spin just for the fun of it.
Sporty Contemporary Styling
Another reason the Civic ran away with this year’s North American Car of the Year Award is its eye-catching styling. The Civic’s swept, “coupe-like” silhouette flows in one graceful arc from the sloping hood back through the rear deck. The Civic’s dramatic new front end features dazzling new available LED headlights accented by LED daytime running lights. Available fog lights set into the lower fascia help illuminate the road. The Civic’s signature rear end features bold, wedge-shaped taillights designed to look like the letter “C.” Speaking of bold, the Civic’s 17-inch sports alloy wheels really make a statement.
Redesigned Upmarket Interior
Just as good-looking is the Civic’s revamped interior. Not only is it roomier than ever, but it abounds in quality, premium materials. The fit and finish are excellent, showing care for the smallest details. For example, a “TechCenter” console is big enough to hold a full-sized tablet. Even the instrumentation is all new for 2016. The Civic’s tech-savvy attitude also shows through with a host of advanced “infotainment” features. Enjoy unrivaled connectivity with Apple CarPlay™ and AndroidAuto™ and use the Civic’s Bluetooth® wireless capabilities to send and receive phone calls, as well as stream audio playlists. HDRadio®, SiriusXM® Radio, and Pandora take your soundtrack to the next level.
High Marks For Safety
The new 2016 Civic also drew accolades for its superior safety features. Honda Sensing™ is a cutting-edge suite of active driver-assist technologies that are designed to prevent accidents from happening in the first place. Such features as Lane Keeping Assist, a standard multi-angle Rearview Camera, Lane Departure Warning, Road Departure Mitigation, Forward Collision Warning, and Collision Mitigation Braking are just some of the reasons the Civic garners top industry safety ratings.
2017 Honda Ridgeline Makes a Dramatic Debut
Honda also made headlines at this year’s NAIAS with the dramatic unveiling of the all-new 2017 Honda Ridgeline midsize pickup. The rugged new Ridgeline is completely redesigned from the ground up. Honda president and CEO, Mr. Takahiro Hachigo joined Honda’s executive VP John Mendel to introduce the new 2nd-generation Ridgeline to the assembled crowd of media and dignitaries.
Honda’s John Mendal called the new Ridgeline “cool, tough, and athletic.” He noted that the Ridgeline offered a more compliant, car-like ride since “the majority of Ridgeline owners will spend most of their time on the highway.”
Mr. Hachigo recalled that he was working in the U.S. when the first-generation Ridgeline debut, featuring innovations such as the two-way tailgate “designed to make people’s lives easier.” He also noted that the Ridgeline won the Truck of the Year award two years ago.
In spite of its composed demeanor on the highway, Honda’s Mendal asserted that “this is a real truck with real payload and real cargo capabilities.” Evidence of this can be found in the Ridgeline’s muscular 300 horsepower, 3.5-liter i-VTEC direct-injection engine. No stranger to off-road adventure, the all-new Ridgeline shows that it can tough it out with the best of them on the backroads. The truck’s i-VTM 4 wheel-drive with Intelligent Terrain Management will be the only truck in its class to offer active torque vectoring.
A Legacy of Excellence
Both the award-winning new 2016 Civic and the new 2017 Ridgeline continue to assert Honda’s dominance on the world automotive stage. They are emblematic of why Honda consistently receives the highest industry and consumer accolades year after year, including winning more “Best Cars for the Money” awards than any other automaker in 2015, according to U.S. News & World Report. And it’s also not surprising that, according to IHS-Polk, 75% of all Hondas built in the last 25 years are still on the road today.
