Take a Weekend Road Trip to Chicago

There’s definitely not a shortage of things to do in Chicago.

First, plan to explore Millenium Park, where you can listen to a free concert and take a picture with the famous “Bean” statue, shop until you drop on the Magnificent Mile, and taste a slice of delicious Chicago-style deep dish pizza.

Your trip from Dayton to Chicago is about a four-hour drive, so you’ll want to stay a couple of days. On day two, take a cruise down the Chicago River, visit the free Lincoln Park Zoo, and ride the huge Ferris Wheel at Navy Pier. There are plenty of museums and skyscrapers to explore too, so make sure you get a City Pass to save money.

Chicago traffic can be intimidating but fear not: Your Honda CRV is the perfect vehicle to get you there safely. The Blind Spot Sensor will help you maneuver the interstate, and the backup camera can assist you with parallel parking on those busy (busy!) city streets. You’ll also have access to hands-free calling and push button start—both helpful to keep distractions to a minimum.

Nashville’s Callin’

Whether you like country music or are visiting to walk through the beautiful Vanderbilt campus, Nashville is another great destination to visit that’s less than a six-hour drive from Greene County, OH.

Nashville’s nickname is “Music City” for a reason. Here you’ll find the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Grand Ole Opry, Ryman Auditorium, and countless honky-tonk bars where you may just see the next big country star.

If you’re not a big fan of country music, there’s still plenty for you to do. Check out the Nashville Zoo, Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art, and the Tennessee State Museum. Stroll around Centennial Park to explore a full-scale replica of the Parthenon or visit Belle Meade Plantation for a gorgeous yet informative tour.

Nashville also has a lot of activities for outdoor enthusiasts. Load your bikes or kayaks in the bed of your new Ridgeline—the 2017 Honda Ridgeline can tow up to a 5,000-pound travel trailer—and head to Nashville Shores along J. Percy Priest Lake. If you don’t have an RV, you can stay in a lakefront cabin. Enjoy the waterpark, treetop adventures, and the beaches. Without a kayak or boat? Jet skis and pontoon boats are also available for rent.

Visit the Capital: Washington, DC

It’s a bit further of a drive, but in as little as seven hours you and your family can explore our Nation’s Capital: Washington, D.C.

The Honda Odyssey is just the right size for this lengthy trip. There’s room for up to 8 people, but if you need space for luggage, take advantage of the split third-row bench. To keep the trip less annoying for you as a driver, load up on some kid-friendly movies to play on the 8-inch LCD screen, and you’ll undoubtedly avoid the “are we there yet” interrogation.

Once you get to D.C., keep the van parked at the hotel and use public transportation. The Metro is inexpensive, safe, and takes you to all the neighborhoods you’ll want to see. The National Mall is surrounded by countless museums (which are mostly free to visit), monuments, and shops. Add Arlington National Cemetery and the Pentagon to your must-see list too. Check out this list of 100 free and cheap things to do in the area.

Washington has a vibrant nightlife, world-class restaurants, and even sports and recreational activities. This trip is one you’ll never forget and can be enjoyed by people of all ages—just wear comfortable shoes, because you will do a lot of walking.
