Fall Car Care Month: Winter Car Prep

As the hit HBO TV series Game of Thrones says: “Winter Is Coming.” With October being Fall Car Care Month, it’s never too early to get a head start on prepping your vehicle for the frigid winter months; especially while September temperatures are still relatively mild.

It’s no secret that winters here in Columbus can be brutal. So it just makes sense to be on the safe side; ensuring that your car will be ready to go when the cold weather hits. Our certified service technicians here at Germain Cadillac of Easton, your preferred Columbus Cadillac dealer, would like to share some of their tips to proactively winterizing your Cadillac. (Of course, these tips apply to just about any vehicle.)

The Four “Bs’ of Winter Car Care:

Blades – Visually inspect your wiper blades for tears, separation, cracking, or split rubber. If your wiper blades steak, skip, or impair visibility, replace them with genuine AC/Delco wiper blades designed especially for your Cadillac. You can purchase these from our Parts Dept. here at Germain Cadillac of Easton. Also check your windshield washer fluid and top off if necessary.

Battery – Cold temperatures test the endurance of your car’s battery and electrical system. Inspect the battery posts and cables for corrosion and clean if necessary. Make sure that all connections are tight. As a rule, batteries only last around three years, especially in extreme climates. If you notice that your car is having trouble starting, have your battery, starter, and alternator checked by one of our certified technicians here at Germain Cadillac of Easton.

Belts – Rubber becomes brittle over time, but particularly when the weather gets cold. Look for cracks in belts and soft or hard areas in hoses, which should be pliable, not spongy. If you aren’t sure, we’ll be happy to inspect and/or replace them for you.

Brakes – Brakes are your first line of defense and need to be working properly to ensure your car’s safety. Today’s clear plastic reservoirs on Cadillacs and other newer cars make it easy for you to inspect fluid levels. If you are adding or replacing brake fluid yourself, make sure to use clean brake fluid from an unopened container to avoid contamination. Other things to look out for are worn brake linings, warped rotors, sticking calipers, or worn-out drums. If you aren’t sure about these components, we encourage you to bring your car to our service department here at Germain Cadillac of Easton and let our certified technicians check things out.

In addition to these “Four B” key car systems, there are several other items you should check, inspect, or replace to make your car ready for the winter months. These include:

Heaters, defrosters, anti-freeze – Improperly working HVAC systems not only makes things uncomfortable inside your car, but they are also a definite safety hazard. It’s also a good idea to check your car’s cabin air filter. Consult your manual for the location. Or take your car to our Cadillac dealership and we’ll do it for you.

Headlights – Improperly aimed, broken, or dim headlights are dangerous. Often, the clear plastic lenses will become cloudy, reducing the light output. These can be easily restored using a variety of DIY products. Or you can take your car to our dealership for restoration.

Motor Oil And Transmission Fluid – Make sure you are using the correct SAE viscosity oil in your car and that the oil is at the correct level. If you aren’t sure, consult your owner’s manual or let us check this for you. We can also inspect and change your transmission fluid, if necessary.

Tires – Like your brakes, your tires are crucial for vehicle safety. Check for signs of trouble, like uneven wear or tread depth. Also, look for bulges or cracks and gouges in the sidewall that could cause a blowout. If you swap your summer tires for winter ones, inspect them before installing them on your vehicle. And tires lose air pressure when the weather gets cold, so inspect your tire pressure regularly.
