6 Awesome Summer Road Trip Ideas That Aren’t Florida Beaches

While the rest of the eastern half of the country makes its way to our Florida beaches and roadside tourist traps, folks in Gainesville have to dodge the coastal traffic, wait impatiently for more bearable temperatures, and (of course) prepare for the Gators’ season-opening kickoff. It isn’t always easy trying to balance it all…

Until now. Available for sale and lease today at Gainesville Buick GMC is the new 2017 GMC Terrain—and it’s is ready to take you on a journey. Loaded with convenience, comfort, and safety features to get you and your Gator-lovin’ friends and family out somewhere fun, the Terrain will make your next summer road trip spectacular. Here are the greatest summer road trip ideas to enjoy while Coach McElwain and company get the boys prepped for what’s shaping up to be a brutal string of Saturdays this fall.

  1. Visit All 14 SEC Campuses

The glorious SEC now includes 14 teams, whether you agree with calling Mizzou a southern team or not. Not only are most of these some serious Gator competition, but they’re also some of the most beautiful college campuses in the country—perhaps even the world. So why not visit them all? The 2017 GMC Terrain gets an impressive 31 MPG on the highway and 21 MPG in town, meaning this is an affordable and convenient way to tour the entire Southeast! One of the most efficient routes from Gainesville to see all 14 campuses is:

  • Gainesville to LSU (we’re sorry)
  • LSU to Texas A&M
  • A&M to the U of Arkansas
  • Arkansas to Mizzou
  • Missouri to Kentucky
  • KY to the U of Tennessee in Knoxville
  • Knoxville to Vandy in Nashville
  • Ole Miss in Oxford, Mississippi
  • Oxford to Mississippi State in Starkville, MS
  • MS State to the U of Alabama
  • Alabama to Auburn
  • Auburn to Georgia
  • Georgia to South Carolina
  • Back to God’s Country in Gatorsville

  1. Romantic & Strategic Charleston, South Carolina

If you’d rather not be reminded of football, consider traveling north to Charleston. Founded in 1670, Charleston is one of the oldest cities in the country. It’s known for its cobblestone streets and gorgeous antebellum homes (many restored to period). Take your brand-new GMC Terrain, with its massive 63.9-cubic foot cargo space, to Centre Market during the day for a shopping spree. Then head out for a tour of Charlotte’s haunted historic district in the evening! Wind down with an unforgettable romantic dinner in one of Charleston’s many highly rated restaurants, or better yet, a dinner cruise in the bay.

  1. Historic & Scenic Chattanooga, Tennessee

If haunted streets aren’t your thing, and you prefer to get as far away from beaches, heat, and humidity as possible, consider driving your new GMC SUV west toward Tennessee instead. Chattanooga has something for any crowd — from the couple’s getaway to a family vacay. There are loads of attractions packed in a small area, making it a great destination for those who prefer not to change hotel rooms every night. Chattanooga boasts one of the country’s most impressive aquariums — two whole buildings including both saltwater and freshwater marine life. Nearby, there’s a science center, IMAX theater, the Chattanooga Choo Choo, Lookout Mountain, and the famed Rock City.

Tennessee is also home to numerous impressive caverns, so plan to pop by Ruby Falls or Raccoon Mountain Cavern, which are both excellent spots for you to escape the Southern heat. Worried about driving in an unfamiliar town? Don’t worry — the 2017 GMC Terrain has your back with top-notch safety features like stability control (great for traversing the Smoky Mountains!), a rear-vision camera, and excellent visibility from the driver’s seat.

  1. Catch a Hot, Hot, Hot Southern NASCAR Race

With room for up to five passengers and their luggage, you can make use of your Terrain’s 1,500-pound towing capacity. Just hook up a camper and head out for one of NASCAR’s summer treks through the southeast, or grab a boat and take to the lake in the evenings. For a race close to home, head over to Daytona International Speedway the weekend of July 1st. As NASCAR’s official Fourth of July celebration, it’s always a weekend jam-packed with fun concerts, fireworks shows, appearances by drivers and other celebrities, and a race!

NASCAR heads to Kentucky Speedway on July 8th, which is a more laid-back event that’s also typically cooler (gotta love those mountain breezes, especially mid-summer!) and less crowded than the Daytona events. On August 1st, NASCAR heads to Bristol, Tennessee, one of the smallest and most exciting tracks on the NASCAR circuit, due to its beat-em-up-bang-em-up style of racing.

  1. Gumbo Trail in Louisiana

Cajuns and Floridians have three things in common: they ain’t afraid of gators, they know it isn’t hot until the mercury hits 100, and they know good food. That makes Louisiana’s trail of world-class gumbo restaurants worth a trip to Tiger country. Southern Living magazine routed you a gumbo trail extravaganza that will get you and your 2017 GMC Terrain back to the Sunshine State before you even break in your free trial of OnStar. (With every new Terrain, you get a free 90-day trial of OnStar. Leasing a new Terrain qualifies you, too!)

  1. Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail Across Alabama

If you’re more of a golfer than a NASCAR fan or gumbo glutton, consider hitting the historical (and surprisingly affordable) Robert Trent Jones golf trail, which is a series of championship-class golf courses around the state of Alabama. Don’t worry; you’ll be done and home in plenty of time to avoid any entanglements with Tide fans or warring Eagles. Taking a golf trip will give you a chance to show off your new SUV, including the Terrain’s snazzy power liftgate that slides up gracefully to accommodate your golf bag and gear. If you happen to get tired between rounds, don’t worry! The all-new Terrain features IntelliLink information and entertainment to keep you wide awake, and Lane Departure Warning in case you stray over the line while driving.
