Golf Tips for Pros & Beginners
Looking to improve your swing? Here are some must-know golf tips to help you get there:
Adopt a Neutral Hand Position
Let your arms hang loosely at your sides and look at your hands, observing how they naturally angle in. Duplicate this by bringing your top or lead hand to the club, holding it tightly in place with your thumb pointing down. Place the bottom or trailing hand below your top hand.
Get the Right Grip
There are three traditional grips, the Vardon or “overlapping” grip where your fit the pinkie finger of the trailing hand between the index and middle finger of the lead hand; the interlocking grip where the pinkie finger of the trailing hand is curled around the index finger of the lead hand; and the ten-finger (baseball) grip where the pinkie finger of the trailing hand is locked close against the index finger of the lead hand.
Take the Correct Stance
Align yourself as if a set of railroad tracks are running from the box to the green. Your body is aligned on the inside rail and the ball is on the outside rail. Spread your feet shoulder width apart and flex your knees slightly while keeping your back straight.
On the backswing, pivot your shoulders toward your spine, shift your weight to the front of your back foot, and hinge your front arm up into a 90-degree L-shape. On the downswing, release your arm toward the target and shift your weight to your front foot in one smooth action.
Count Through the Rhythm of Your Swing
Practice counting “one-one-thousand, two-one-thousand” and swing back on one and down on two.
Keep it Fun
Perhaps the best piece of advice for all golfers is to relax. Getting so hung up and obsessed about achieving the perfect technique can simply spoil the enjoyment of the game. After all, it’s supposed to be fun, right?
