Central Valley Nissan, your hometown Modesto Nissan dealership, encourages you to support our community by contributing to and participating in a variety of worthy causes. Since October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we turn the spotlight on how you can support breast cancer awareness and help fight this terrible disease here in Modesto and Sacramento.
Breast cancer rates second among cancer deaths in women after lung cancer. Men also can get breast cancer. In 2013, more than 2,000 men across the country were diagnosed with this disease. According to the California Cancer Registry, nearly one out of every two Californians born today will develop cancer at some point in their lives. It is likely that one in five will result in death from the disease.
Local Breast Cancer Awareness Organizations & Events
There are three organizations leading the charge against breast cancer in our area: the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® Sacramento Valley chapter, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Modesto®, and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Sacramento®. Each year, these non-profit groups conduct many fundraising activities, including their signature “walks” held at various times during the year. Additionally, these organizations also provide support groups, celebrate survivorship, offer educational events, and present health fairs.
Susan G. Komen
Much of the money raised stays here in our local community. The Susan G. Komen organization, for example, has invested approximately $15 million locally since 1997. While the Susan G. Komen Sacramento Race for the Cure held their major walk event back on May 9th of this year, you can still contribute to this worthy cause. You can donate money, conducting fundraisers, sponsor teams for next year’s run, and volunteer at events and activities.
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer will be conducting two major fundraising events in our area during the month of October:
- Making Strides of Modesto’s walk will occur on Sunday, Oct. 18 beginning at 9 a.m. at the Gallo Center for the Arts, 1000 I St.
- Making Strides of Sacramento’s walk event will occur on Sunday, Oct. 18 at the west steps of the State Capital in Sacramento. Registration begins at 7 a.m., and the walk begins at 8 a.m.
Another way you can be part of the fight against breast cancer is to become a member of the Making Strides Pacesetters Club. Pacesetters who raise $2,500 or more receive special recognition for their accomplishments. You can also become an advocate for breast cancer research on a federal level through the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network™.
Participate. Donate. Get involved. “Think pink.” Working together here in Modesto, in Sacramento, and throughout the country, we can cure this deadly disease. All it takes is the hero in you.
