Everyone looks forward to having a three-day holiday on Memorial Day Weekend, but the real purpose of this holiday is to set aside a time to remember and honor the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces, who so gallantly and courageously made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of liberty, freedom, and our cherished American way of life.
Originally called “Decoration Day,” Memorial Day began shortly after the end of the Civil War and was made an official national holiday by President Lyndon B. Johnson in May, 1966.
Moina Michael, author of the poem “In Flanders Fields,” created the idea of wearing red poppies in honor of the fallen. Her poem reads, in part:
“We cherish too, the Poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies.”
On this hallowed day, the American flag is raised briskly to the top of the staff and then solemnly lowered to half-staff. It remains at half-staff to honor the more than one million men and women who gave their lives serving in the armed forces. At noon, the flag is raised to symbolize those who pledge to continue to fight for liberty and justice for all.
The POW-MIA flag is also raised and lowered in a similar fashion. Boy and Girl Scouts adorn gravestones with American flags at veterans’ cemeteries across the nation in remembrance. At 3 p.m. local time, a “National Moment of Remembrance” occurs where Americans unite from sea to shining sea for a moment of silent reflection to honor the fallen.
