2018 BMW X1: The Luxury Crossover You’ve Been Waiting For

A dream car awaits you, and it’s called the 2018 BMW X1. It’s the luxury crossover that Car and Driver dubbed “the boy king,” with its “quick, nimble, spacious, well-built and undeniably upscale” demeanor. These guys don’t hand out praise like candy, as you might know, so hearing them gush about the 2018 X1 should tell you a thing or two about its quality and performance.

U.S. News and World Reports’ reviewers like the 2018 BMW X1 so much, they rate it #1 in the Luxury Subcompact SUV class. The reasons for their accolades? They love the X1’s punchy powertrain and ability to handle just about anything. They also love its “spacious, comfy seats” and its “best-in-class cargo space” (a whopping 58.7 cubic feet thanks to hidden storage under the rear seats).

You might not be expecting to find something like cargo space mentioned when talking about a subcompact, but the 2018 BMW X1 has a surprising amount of just that. That means that the X1 is not just a blast to drive, but also a practical subcompact SUV that handily beats out rivals like the Audi Q3 or the Mercedes-Benz GLA in terms of toting your gear.

Let’s take a closer look at the BMW X1 to see why the critics are so enthusiastic about this perky little subcompact crossover.

What’s New?

Probably the most significant change for the X1 is the change in driving platform from rear-wheel-drive to front-wheel-drive. It’s also taller than before, making entering and exiting a breeze. Apple CarPlay is also a new option. Otherwise, the 2018 X1 is as elegant as its 2017 predecessor.

Exceptional Interior

If you were expecting to find a refined cabin, you won’t be disappointed. As U.S. News’ reviewers point out, “craftsmanship is the same top-notch quality as other BMWs, and premium trimmings such as brushed aluminum and piano black add to its sophisticated styling.” And thanks to a more compact powertrain layout, there’s lots of extra legroom in the rear — the part of the X1’s interior that most impressed Car and Driver’s reviewers, who liked the fact that rear-seat passengers ride higher in the 2018 BMW X1, allowing for better views.

The X1s dash is outfitted with what U.S. News’ reviewers call a “straightforward infotainment system” with easy to use knobs controlling the 6.5-inch non-touchscreen display. Car and Driver’s reviewers concurred, calling the dash “an intelligent mix of knobs and buttons” that make adjusting climate control, making a phone call or tweaking the navigation system hassle-free.

Under the Hood Perfection

Car and Driver’s reviewers love the X1’s engine and transmission pairing. Here’s what they had to say about it: “BMW mastered smooth, sweet four-cylinder engines ages ago, and the X1’s new turbocharged 2.0-liter largely lives up to the brand’s elite standards. It collaborates with the new eight-speed wide-ratio Aisin automatic to provide vigorous thrust with no commotion.” And if you — like most subcompact SUV buyers — were looking for great gas mileage, the BMW X1 delivers that too with an EPA rating of 22 mpg city, 32 highway (although Car and Driver’s reviewers said their average city mileage was even better, averaging 25 mpg).

Upgrades Galore

Although the 2018 BMW X1’s standard features are already great — sport steering wheel, power tailgate, and power front seats, for example — BMW offers several upgrade options as well. Offered in “tiers”, you can start with “Convenience” options like power-folding and auto-dimming mirrors and a panoramic moonroof. Move up a tier to “Premium” and you’ll get more great features like BMW Remote Services, which allows you to control functions and check in on your vehicle from your smartphone, LED headlights and navigation, to name a few. Then there’s the “Driver Assist” tier which brings you things like City Collision Mitigation and Pedestrian Detection, automatic headlights, and speed limit info updates while you’re on the highway. Finally, you can choose the “Luxury” tier to score even more interior refinement like Fine-wood and Brushed Aluminum Trims with Pearl Chrome Accent and a Dakota leather interior!

Also available are all-wheel drive, and a heated steering wheel and seats.

The Do’s & Don’ts of Black Friday Shopping

If you live for those post-Thanksgiving sales, you know all too well how hectic shopping can be. But what about all those Black Friday newbies out there, itching for a chance to score a 70% discount on a TV for their Liberty University dorm? Or the disorganized shopper who really needs a new car in Lynchburg? Here are some handy “Do’s and Don’ts” to get both your body and mind prepared for the chaos that is Black Friday.

Black Friday Shopping

Black Friday Do’s

  • Sign up for email alerts. Many retailers, including our Lynchburg BMW dealership, may send out special “Black Friday Deals” emails to followers.
  • Follow social media. More and more stores are using the internet to make waves on Black Friday. A quick check on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram may present you an unadvertised sale on something you need, like a new USB cable for your BMW (or deals on items you definitely don’t need, like a miniature rubber chicken).
  • Grab local papers. After the Thanksgiving feast, some families will sit around the couch and circle the deals they like most. Make this a new yearly tradition if you haven’t already done so.
  • Keep tabs on national deals. A database of ads from pennypinchinmom.com may help as you set out to find the best Black Friday specials.
  • Plan your Black Friday route. Nothing is more infuriating than driving around the busy streets of Lynchburg or Bedford without a Black Friday plan! Use your own knowledge of the area and download a customized Google Map to sort the morning out, or utilize a free online tool like gottadeal.com.
  • Shop early. And we mean days, not just Friday morning. You can usually find Black Friday deals on the days leading up to the actual “biggest sales day of the year,” meaning you won’t have to change out of your pajamas to get what you want.
  • Charge your phone. If you head out to River Ridge Mall with a charge under 100%, you’re gonna have a bad time.
