The 2018 Mazda 3 Continues the “Zoom-Zoom” Tradition

Modern times call for modern solutions, so Mazda wisely included several newly standard features across the 2018 Mazda 3 sedan and hatchback lineups—and with nary a boost in sticker price, too.

All three trims (Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring) now come equipped with automatic emergency brakes (Smart City Brake Support). For the mid-range Mazda 3 Touring, new elegant yet muscular aluminum wheels set the stage for a similarly sophisticated cabin, which comes with new illuminated vanity mirrors and a handy sunglass holding compartment. The top-tier Mazda 3 Grand Touring gets bulkier thanks to a fully loaded Premium Package that includes Mazda Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Traffic Sign Recognition, and more; this Premium Package is standard on Grand Touring models with automatic transmissions.

Carried over from the 2017 model year is a base 2.0L four-cylinder that churns out 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. This power plant was standard on Mazda 3 Sport and Touring trims last year, but it now sits underneath the hood of only the Sport model. Replacing that engine for the 2018 Touring trim is an advanced 2.5L SKYACTIV®-G 4-cylinder, which makes 184 hp and 185 pound-feet of torque. Now the Touring and Grand Touring are on equal playing fields.

Small Car. Big Personality.

All 2018 Mazda 3 models offer a lot of pep without the backtalk, but it’s the Grand Touring version that takes the cake for “Best Mazda 3.”

On the outside, the GT is overflowing with charisma. Bi-LED headlamps automatically level out to illuminate even the darkest and curviest roads. Rain-sensing wipers enhance visibility without the traditional distraction that comes with adjusting levers and knobs. Heated side mirrors help you tell the chilly Roanoke winters to take a hike, while 18-inch aluminum wheels welcome summertime road trips south to Smith Mountain Lake.

Bury yourself deep in the heated driver’s seat, grip onto the leather steering wheel, and you’ll feel like a new person. Is that revitalized “you” due to the perfect amount of natural light seeping in from the power sunroof or the jams pumping out of the nine-speaker Bose® stereo system? The world may never know, but we expect it to be a combination of the two in addition to the following cabin-wide comforts:

  • Dual-zone automatic climate control (with pollen filter)
  • Push button start
  • A 7” color touchscreen
  • Bluetooth® hands-free capability
  • MAZDA CONNECT™ infotainment with Pandora®, HD Radio™, and Aha™
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio
  • Two front USB ports
  • A rearview camera
  • Paddle shifters (automatic transmissions only)
  • Advanced blind-spot monitoring
  • Whiplash-reducing seats
  • A total of 47.1 cubic feet of cargo space (hatchback only)

Of course, it’s all about the motion in the ocean, not the boat itself. With the 2018 Mazda 3, you’ll be Master and Commander of the asphalt. Steering is precise. The suspension is finely crafted to absorbs the road’s little bumps and bruise-inducing potholes. Brakes react well to pressure and inspire confidence, which is a major reason why 2017’s IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award should carry over to 2018. You’ll even shave off a few yearly trips to the pump thanks to some incredible fuel efficiency (depending on trim and transmission, the Mazda 3 returns up to 37 mpg on the highway).

All in all, this is one compact car that over-delivers on its promise of offering the “zoom-zoom” we’ve grown to love at our Mazda dealership near Roanoke, VA.
