Meet Your Next Best Friend, America: The 2018 Ford F-150

As America’s best-selling pickup truck for 40-some-odd years, the Ford F-150 has a lot going for it. Now in its 13th generation—wow, time flies—the all-new 2018 F-150 is here to continue that trend. But how do you differentiate its good qualities from its really-good qualities? Let’s see what the industry’s critics think of this all-new F-150, which is available for sale and lease right now at our Ford dealer near Roanoke, VA.

New F-150 Engine Lineup

“Loads of choices. That’s what truck buyers want, and with the F-150, they definitely have them.”

Motor Trend recently reviewed the 2018 F-150, and they sure loved the power underneath its hood.

A base 3.3L V6 (290 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque) has replaced last year’s 3.5-liter in the lower F-150 XL and XLT trims, while a 2.7L EcoBoost® V6 (325 hp and 400 lb-ft) fits inside the mid-level LARIAT model. It’s the latter option that invites praise from Motor Trend’s reviewer; the 2.7-liter twin-turbo is a lively bugger that accelerates quickly and aggressively even at low rpm. Married with a 10-speed transmission that upshifts sharply and efficiently, the V6 fares far better than just about every other 9-speed pairing on the road. It hits all the right notes, and then some, as its new gearbox even ups the truck’s fuel economy a bit, as does a newly standard start/stop idling feature.

Also noteworthy is the upgraded 5.0L Ti-VCT (395 hp and 400 lb-ft), which “delivers its luscious fourth-order cross-plane-crank V-8 solo in a baritone-bass register” to sound off like the big-time engine that it is. Although catered mostly to traditionalists, this V8 is a surefire way to turn heads.

However, the F-150’s 3.5L turbo V6 (375 hp and 387 lb-ft) is not to be overlooked. As the Car Connection states, “this engine is effortlessly strong, whether from a standstill or at freeway speeds.” That’s because the twin turbochargers manage to perk up on the high end of the RPM meter, which is something most other V6s fail to do.

Oh, and did we mention the 2018 Ford F-150 still offers best-in-class towing? It’s true!

What Else is New?

“The F-150 Lariat gets high marks for everyday ease of use and interior quality. Combined with the ratings for comfort, it’s simply a pleasant place to spend a full day on the road.”

On the inside, most of what worked so remarkably well in the 2017 F-150 is carried over, including a swath of modern tech along the dash, high-res touchscreen, and an enormous central stack and storage area. Range-topping F-150 trims are decked out in lavish offerings, including leather seats with pristine stitching, an upgraded premium sound system, improved visibility, and massaging front seats.

Ford’s Sync 3 infotainment system is as robust as the market offers and comes completely compatible with smartphone apps like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, among others. Plus, the F-150 touchscreen is incredibly responsive to the touch, which translates to less time cursing and more time doing what Ford’s premier truck does best: conquering the road. New Wi-Fi functionality is also embedded into this Ford pickup’s DNA.

For those who judge a truck by its outer shell, you’ll love the variety offered with the 2018 F-150. It comes with six newly added wheels to match six newly added grilles, as well as some general styling updates. The “black honeycomb” grille gives some of us at Berglund Ford wobbly knees due to its modern and dapper “Super Duty” look. C-shaped headlamps and a mesh front fender just add onto the appeal.

On the safety front, the F-150 gets a thoroughly improved forward collision-mitigation system, blind-spot monitoring, and an expansion of adaptive cruise control. All the protection you need packaged in a truck you deserve? Count your lucky stars.

“We’ll soon see whether the 2018 F-150 can repeat as a 10Best Trucks and SUVs winner…but everything we see here indicates it’s still a satisfying truck.”
