Did you know that there’s a day specifically dedicated to food? It’s true! On October 16th, 2017, World Food Day will commence, and we at Berglund Chevy Buick wanted to join in on the celebration. Here are some of the finest local Roanoke restaurants you should try. Just remember to bring your appetite.
What’s for Breakfast?
Scrambled – Sure, you could toss a couple slices of bread in the toaster in the morning, but why torture yourself with a doctor-prescribed breakfast? Instead, wake up, get out of bed, and run a comb across your head before heading to Scrambled, a quaint little breakfast café located in the heart of downtown Roanoke’s Historic Market Building. If the “fast casual” atmosphere and beautiful garden patio doesn’t jolt you awake, their menu of traditional American breakfast cuisine should do the trick. Some favorite dishes include the Star City Scramble, City Market Shrimps & Grits, and Scrambled’s Famous Vanilla French Toast.
Check out the entire Scrambled breakfast menu on their Facebook page.
For a Midmorning Munch O’ Brunch
Mockingbird Café & Bakery – If you’re more of a night owl than an early bird, put a spring in your step with a delicious breakfast-lunch from Mockingbird Café & Bakery. Offering a whole host of delicious savory and sweet menu items for brunch, this local restaurant is located amongst the antique stores, boutiques, and barber shops of downtown Christiansburg, VA. Take a seat in their cozy dining area and nibble away at a French macaron or two (or six), sip quietly on a cup of coffee, or tackle their peach pie-cinnamon bun—a seriously huge and delectable treat for your taste buds.
Support your local Christiansburg restaurants and “do brunch” at Mockingbird! Visit www.mockingbirdcafe.biz for contact info and hours.
The Perfect Workday Lunch in Salem
Mac and Bob’s – Located across from the Roanoke College in Salem, VA, Mac and Bob’s Restaurant is well-known for their lunchtime offerings of sandwiches, salads, burgers, and calzones. Got #humpday hunger? Fill up on their Boston Zone, a calzone stuffed with chicken tenders, mozzarella, and a slathering of hot wing sauce. Taking a break from fried food? Order the Gorgonzola-Apple Salad, which is packed with tart Granny Smiths, sun-dried cranberries, walnuts, and sprinklings of the infamous Italian blue cheese. And don’t forget to sip one of their 40-plus craft beers on tap!

Fine Exotic Dining in Roanoke
Carlos Brazilian International Cuisine – Although this local restaurant may have an uninspired name, its gourmet Brazilian food makes up for it. The owner and chef de cuisine, Carlos Amaral, has won numerous awards for his creative style and amazing palette, and considering this Brazilian restaurant is always on local “Best of” lists, it appears that all of Roanoke agrees.
Start with an appetizer like the Shrimp La Rios, which features fresh jumbo prawns glazed in white wine sauce and topped with fresh tomatoes and herbs. For the main course, try the Brazil 2001, a collection of beef, pork, chicken, and sausage marinated in garlic-Merlot sauce and served over rice. Top it off with dessert—one of Chef Amaral’s specialties—and allow the caramel-glazed flan melt on your tongue. It’s the perfect end to a perfect night.

A Cheap Family Meal in Christiansburg
Due South BBQ – Pack some Wet-Naps® and bring the whole family to Due South BBQ for an affordable (and messy!) dinner. A South Carolina transplant, this BBQ hotspot moved to Christiansburg in 2007 and now serves up all the slow-cooked pulled pork, brisket, ribs, and BBQ chicken you could ever want. You can even order from their to-go menu; skip the KFC buckets on your Friday commute home and grab a Family Special instead, which includes BBQ pork or beef, handmade buns, additional sauces, sides, and a gallon of tea. If you’ve got a hankering for that South Carolina BBQ tang, take a trip to Due South.

For a Friendly Neighborhood Nightcap
Martin’s – This pub has been “making Roanoke cooler one weekend at a time since 2005.” More than 75 signature cocktails, beers, wines, and mixed drinks are served here, so you’ll always find a libation to top off your evening. If you’re a stickler for sweet drinks, try the Original Frozen Cali-Bomb, a cocktail containing all of an adult’s essential nutrients (orange vodka, cranberry juice, and Red Bull). From drinks to pub fare to live music, Martin’s is the ideal Roanoke bar to help you brush off that hectic Monday-to-Friday.
